Post the last album that made you feel this way. Albums that are just as plentiful in quality, in your opinion.

Shiny Beast (Bat Chain Puller) Captain Beefheart. If Trout Mask Replica is his classic, this is the one I actually listen to.

Even the band disowned it but I really love it.

I always loved that one too. It has some naff moments, mainly I Don't Know Where It Comes From, but there are many good songs. I couldn't get into Tarantula though.

That Mamas and Papas LP is fantastic and has a dark undercurrent running through the whole album.

A discussion about it between @Man at C&A and myself is what inspired this thread topic.

I agree. It's a much darker and less optimistic album than the previous ones. On tracks like "Mansions" you can sense that they were starting to get a bit jaded with fame and adulation. I've always loved how on this album they became more experimental with more adventurous tracks like "Gemini Childe" and "Too Late".
But John Phillips' innate talent for melody was still intact; "Safe in my Garden" and "Rooms" are among the best he has ever written.

I've said plenty of times that Trompe Le Monde by Pixies is their masterpiece and should be considered on par critically with Doolittle.

This is my favourite Genesis album by a v-e-r-y long way. Adore it. It’s exquisite.

Their critical standing was on the vane when it was released, perhaps that's why. Like they weren't that cool anymore.

There are a couple of tunes on there that I can well live without (hello Endless Road, for example, and I was never a fan of How Does It Feel To Feel...) but as a big Ride fan when Carnival Of Light came out, I still found much to love. If you swap out a couple of iffy album tracks for the excellent b-sides of the time (Let's Get Lost, Don't Let It Die, At The End Of The Universe) you end up with an even better album, IMO.

If you get it see that the pop up in the gatefold is intact. The closing track - very "Wicker Man":

They can't have been, Trompe Le Monde was the first Pixies album I heard and bought and I wasn't cool! Great album and my favourite Pixies one too.
