Well this all did get me thinking about improving my cable runs.
Original plan was to run low oxygen 3/0 ground wire across the ceiling attached to an external grounding grid. From this I was going to use silver coated low oxygen copper wire strung down to support the various cables at different heights. Perfect! Like a garden bean trellis.
Actually as my cables all run together along the baseboard it has always bothered me that I could not really separate the power cables from the rest. Thinking of using some matching oak to make a separate tray level maybe 3” above the floor to get some spacing. Can’t hurt, might look nicer, would get power cord isolation to some extent. Still need to have access to wires for future needs so can’t be boxed in.
    Oh great, another project!

Differences in tubes can't be measured?

What physical parameters are changed other than elevation and potential energy?

There's no comparison... cable elevators are way faster than hydraulic ones- I mean, you can travel twenty floors on a cable elevator in the time you've gone two on a hydraulic one.

    Wait...am I missing something here? :D

  6. A lot of them use really beefy pistons. They're quite impressive.
To be fair, I have not seen piston elevators in a high rise.

My ocd is twitching just looking at that :D
Can I come over and sort that out?

Pneumatic elevators are the way to go - much less ground loop interference by avoiding a cable being attached to anything ;)

The technical limit is ~8 stories, but practically seldom more than 3-4.
The limitation is speed. Code max is .200 ft/min.
    Cables can approach 1000+
In an 8 story 400-600, acceleration limits the maximum, you only want 1/4 g or so, maybe a bit more for the initial jerk.

I keep seeing references to “cutting the cord”.
Would this be a good application for that? ;)

  11. What defines a 'story'. I can't say where I see piston elevators but the 'story' is ~20ft high.

Typically 12'- 15' depending on bldg. type.
    Old WTC ~12 (1350' ~ 110 stories)

Nice! I work (when not in pandemic mode) on the 21st floor and love how quickly those cable elevators can zip me up to the office.

They are modern marvels, some as fast as 4000 ft/min (45 mph)
    Next, magnetic drive?

I've worked with ones that rise 10's of floors and ones that lower from ground level 1000's of feet.

    Ahem..

The technical term is a "snake pit."

All elevator kidding aside- the back of my A/V cabinet is, indeed, a pit of snakes.

I have never said tube specs can't be measured or that there could be no be differences between specs, I was talking about something else. Your quote and that question are based on a fabrication.

What exactly do you mean, then? The first sentence applies to almost everyone. Tube changes can be measured, cable changes can't.

  23. My personal take on it is they're there to stop people from kicking or standing on the cable.

Topic of the week - 'Pints with Ayre' just happens to cover cable lifters. Bonus: they also talk about aftermarket AC cables. I personally use rebar chairs just to get most of my cables off the carpet for ease of cleaning/neatness. No clue if they make a sonic difference or not. I think I paid $.85 each (they've gone up a bit), so it's an incredibly cheap tweak. These are what I bought. They look like mini jackstands: Dayton Superior 3"-3-1/4" Straddle Rebar Chair - White Cap .
They also have different styles and sizes. I bought some 1" chairs for the cables routed under my center rack due to clearance issues.

And the Pints with Ayre topic for the week:

Perhaps they should first focus on getting their heat to work?
