I recently discovered Astral Traveling by Pharaoh Saunders on the Thembi album - absolutely beautiful, spiritual, and emotionally moving. The next song on that album is...jarring...to say the least.

I've been through the big discussion thread but any specific tracks/albums/compilations that the forum would recommend in a similar vein to Astral - the calmer side of spiritual jazz?

    Thank you.

Pharoah Sanders had a later 70's album titled Pharoah with a sidelong track "Harvest Time" that may be what you have in mind.

  3. I don't know your album so I'm not sure if this fits the bill, but you may try Sonny Greenwich, a gorgeous spiritual, lyrical player...

Spiritual Jazz? Surely that calls for Alice Coltrane (Pharoah Sanders even plays on some of her albums)!

Will Bill Frisell release an album of Gospel tunes? That would fit the bill...

Some great spiritual jazz big in London at the moment. Check out the following:
    Tenderlonious - The shakedown
Shabaka and the Ancestors - Wisdom Of Elders
    Nubya Garcia - Nubya’s 5ive

  13. Even rarer still, from a performance in Toronto I believe taped and released on LP by the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation, dig this version of "Time-Space" (one of the tracks from the album above) with vocals...

Try a couple of compilations to see what you might like. This is a favorite of mine that's readily available on CD.

For discs by single artists I don't think you could go wrong with this one.

There's a whle scene very into John & Alice Coltrane based around Manchester captured on Matthew Halsall's Gondwana records.

All of Halsall's own records are worth a listen

Thank you - added these to the list. Have you heard Maisha - There Is a Place? London based as well - really good.

Yes, the album just came out and includes Nubya Garcia which I recommended above.
The record is out on the Brownswood label owned by Gilles Peterson. He is heavily involved in introducing all sorts of music from Brazil, Cuba, Africa and Spiritual Jazz. Other labels worth checking out are Jazz Re:freshed and Jazzman Records .
In fact if you start following leads you will discover a lot of interesting music that is happening in the U.K. right now

Seconded. I'll check out anything on Brownswood or any project that includes Shabaka Hutchings.
Here's another suggestion that is still getting a lot of play in my rotation:

And don't forget the new release from Kamaal Williams:

There are a few songs that "Take you there". They aren't jazz though.

If you are in the right mood this song will do it.

Crescent by John Coltrane is not exactly spiritual but it surely is calm and beautiful.
