    Can Anybody Suggest.....

Ok, heres my problem. I live for music.

I have to install something in my living room to absorb the sound. (many problems with the upstairs folks).

I need to install Acoustic panels on the ceiling to grab the sound before it travels up.

Now, I could use regular Studio Foam panels, and they even make them in white.

BUT, those are like 2 inches thick.

Does anybody know if anyone makes FLAT Acoustic panels in white? I'd need several large ones for the living room. The lighter the better, of course so they dont fall!!

    Any help is most appreciated.

    thanks,

    Mikey

Although Acoustic tiles may help somewhat, what you really need, Mikey, is what is called a 'sound barrier' in order to block sounds from traveling through walls, ceilings, etc. I'm not sure if a sound barrier can be applied directly on a wall or if it needs to be inside the wall. Usually it is some sort of heavy vinyl or neoprene. Here are a few links that may help:

I would suggest using resilent channel bars - a high density barrier and plaster-board, neoprene or mastic sealed around the edges - you will lose a couple of inches in room height but it will a good degree of sound reduction. Alternative processes are available if you have access to the void space between the floors from the folk above.

All the best - Andrew :)

Thanks Andy, but I cant use that. Basically, its a plaster ceiling and I cant screw anything into the joists. What I basically need are big "Tiles" that have adheisive on one side, so I can just "stick" them to the ceiling.

Something like that, in white so that it matches the walls.

Mike, keep in mind that if you stick tiles on the ceiling, when it comes time to remove them, you will remove the outer layer sheetrock with them.
Here is another link for acoustic treatment, good luck.:)
