Can you live with your current speaker until you die?

For a true audiophile, a shipping box is just an ordinary cardboard box. A true audiophile would want to be buried with his or her speaker cabinets. :)

Of course, you can also be a true audiophile if you have speakers that are the size of a shoe box. Just consider cremation.

I typically don't connect speaker purchases with my mortality :D but I recently had a thread on a speaker purchase, and although I had every intention of picking up a newer / more modern speaker, I ended up with a vintage pair of Yamaha NS-2000's.

Although I undoubtedly will get other speakers in to try and perhaps even keep, the NS-2000's I will be passing down to my sons'. If I had to live with these speakers, I would be perfectly content. They are really a special speaker, even with their 36 year old drivers and caps! (I plan on doing work on the crossovers over time... carefully!). There's just something about an overbuilt, beryllium driver speaker from the early 80's that appeals to me. They are a piece of history, and their rarity and build quality means they hold their value well.

I shared pics on a thread already, but here are a couple. Being a woodworker for years, I love the patina of the American Walnut...[IMG]

We are not immortal so we can die anytime in the future. But the question is whether you can keep one speaker until you die?

Besides my well-loved Focals, I should have added that I'm perfectly happy with the speakers in my other two systems:

Bedroom - restored EPi 100W. Had them for over twenty years now. Lovely.
Office - DLK Modular Ones. I've had more different speakers in this system than the others. Finally happy with these little gems.

My speakers are Magnepan MG10 QR's that I've had for nearly 20 years. I've had the opportunity to hear a good amount of other speakers over the years. But I haven't heard anything that would make me ditch my speakers for a similar price range.

I had used Apogee Duetta Signature for 10 years before.

Thus I fully understand your affection with planar Maggie.

I hope you will enjoy it for your life.

I still have the original Advent loudspeakers that I bought new in 1978, so yeah, I guess I can.

This whole dying theme is starting to get me depressed! :D

I looked at my speakers about an hour ago, and started thinking how long I was going to live? :wtf:

You had been using the same speaker for 40 years.

    I had tried 15 speakers since 1978.

I wish you keep it for your life.

Look at things this way. If your speakers are truly "end game" than they will still be around as a reminder of you.

Crap, I bet some of my gear, properly cared for (which probably is not going to happen) might be around for another of my lifetimes.

I have so much gear piles everywhere, at my age, I should probably be starting to put some of it up for permanent adoption.

Despite the slightly morbid premise I enjoy everyone’s input in this thread and especially the OP’s positivity. Great thread!

Thanks a lot for your compliment.

My father died 2 years ago at the age of 87 years and 11 months.

I wish to be positive so that I may live past 90.

Do you think they might run away with another audiophile? :)

I don't want to live with my headphones till I die. I want some new and improved and better headphones before I die. Headphones are in a period of advancement. New designs, new discoveries in materials, new discoveries in sound signatures and what actually sounds neutral on headphones. A whole lot of new R&D and new ideas going on. I don't want to miss out the better headphones that will be coming.

Speakers in comparison are much more mature. Speakers are still improving, but at a much slower rate than headphones.

It would be easier to live with good speakers till I die. It would be harder to do so with headphones. Headphones are going to get better and I don't want to miss out on experiencing those better headphones.

I know there is always something out there that might make me happier, I've yet to hear it, so many variables to contend with. Right now, my ML Summit's properly set up in a room that allows the sound stage to drop your jaw, lightening fast response. Proud to be a member of the planar/ribbon/ 'stat club :tiphat:.
