Yes, get these. They're just what you want. As an added bonus they're both remastered by Steve.

John Lee Hooker - Boogie Chillen

Lightnin Hopkins - Broken Hearted Blues

  3. I have these two already, but I think they are completely different to "Folk Singer" and "Goin' Away". I don't really hear any acoustic guitars for the most part, if I remember correctly. They are great, don't get me wrong, I just wouldn't put them in the same stylistic category as the other two albums.

  4. Thanks for the recommendations, I will see if I can find some of these.

Besides the great recordings of legendary artists such as BB King , I might suggest Eric Clapton's great tribute to the Blues "From the Cradle"

Robert Lockwood Jr. - Delta Crossroads on Telarc SACD is fantastic.

This one is absolutely amazing. Incredible songs performed masterfully all by John on his own. The sense of space in the recording is downright spooky, and especially startling on headphones. I get chills down the spine listening to it!

Don't know, as I don't own the latter - I own the separate single OBC releases.

As a side note, I notice that this two-fer is missing some of the songs from the separate releases. Just a heads-up.

Yea, just read that 2 songs on each album are missing. That's a pass then.

Agreed! I have the SACD and is the one SACD that I can think of that really shows the capabilities of the format. It is utterly convincing and present in a sonic context. If the SACD is this good, I can well appreciate your recommendation of the 45 RPM vinyl. Great sounding recording!

  18. Got that one today, and yes, I like it also. Thanks.

alone and acoustic....first thing that comes to mind are just about any Lightnin' Hopkins records.

  22. Not an audiophie release, but it sounds good on my modest system, very dynamic - Sean Costello (RIP) "We Can Get Together". I tout this album every chance I get. Not an SRV clone (unlike KWS).

    *****
Roy Rogers & The Delta Rhythm Kings. Phenomenal slide/guitar, plus bass (usually standup) and drums. Fantastic live. Plays mostly small Northern California clubs. From wiki - "Rogers plays a variety of guitar styles related to the Delta blues, but is most often recognized for his virtuoso slide work."

Soulful blues and R&B from someone who's been playing it for 20+ years - Tommy Castro - "Hard Believer". Again, sounds good on my modest system. And again, great live.

What's the difference between these two? Both are described as containing his last two albums but one has more tracks than the other on CD.

I love the sound of the regular CD release of Albert King "I'll Play The Blues For You" on my system. I also have the SACD version of this title but actually like the regular CD release better, at least on my system.

Has anybody got a picture of this obscure but awesome album?
