Wilco -- "Ashes of American Flags". For a bundle of twenties and a small service fee I could spend three dollars and sixty-three cents On Diet Coca-Cola and unlit cigarettes
Mark Lanegan - One Hundred Days "From my fingertips, the cigarette throws ashes to the ground I'd stop and talk to the girls who work this street, but I got business farther down"
John Prine - How Lucky Today I walked down the street I used to wander Yeah, I scratched my head and lit my cigarette Well there's all these things I don't think I remember Hey how lucky can one man get
Rupert Holmes again. It's not really a song but I love the exchange in Psychodrama which closes out the Widescreen album; "Hey slick, got a cigarette?" "Sorry, I don't smoke.... Would you like some sugarless gum?"
"You light up another cigarette and I pour the wine It's four o'clock in the morning and it's starting to get light Now I'm right where I wanna be, losing track of time But I wish that it was still last night" Beverley Craven Promise Me
"She's got the money / And he's always broke / I don't like cigarettes / And I like to smoke" Paula Abdul Opposites Attract
Juanita and Juan Very clever with maracas Making their fortunes Selling secondhand tobaccos Juan dances at Chico's And when the clients are evicted He empties the ashtrays And pockets all that he's collected
"I must have lit my seventh cigarette at half past two And at the time I never even noticed I was blue" Abba The Day Before You Came
Those are some great Wilco songs, but probably my favorite by them is "A Shot In The Arm". While it doesn't explicitly mention cigarettes, the line "The ashtray says / You were up all night" evokes a great visual that any smoker has most likely experienced first hand at some point.
