Canada Condemns 'Racist' Conan O'Brien TV Show

Triumph the Insult Comic Dog strikes out!

    By David Ljunggren

OTTAWA (Reuters) - Canada's government on Friday condemned a show by U.S. late-night television host Conan O'Brien that insulted people in French-speaking Quebec and seemed to suggest everyone in the province was homosexual.

Ottawa and the province of Ontario paid $760,000 to help O'Brien -- who appears on the NBC television network -- bring his show to Toronto for a week to boost the city's profile after a deadly SARS (news - web sites) outbreak last year.

But the federal government said O'Brien had gone too far with the show broadcast on Thursday in which he went to Quebec, a province which has had separatist governments for much of the last 20 years and is a delicate political topic in Canada.

"We want to disassociate ourselves from the comments which were broadcast last night because we do not support them in any way," junior government minister Mauril Belanger told Parliament.

At one point in the show, Triumph the Insult Comic Dog -- a hand puppet that is a regular on the show -- said to a Quebecer: "You're French, you're obnoxious and you no speekay English." It told another: "I can smell your crotch from here."

O'Brien's team were also shown replacing street signs in the province with those that read "Quebecqueer Street" and "Rue des Pussies."

Alexa McDonough, a legislator for the left-leaning New Democrats, described the program as "racist filth" and "utterly vile" and demanded the government seek the return of the C$1 million subsidy.

"There may be those who would say, 'Isn't this interfering with freedom of expression?' It's not interfering to say we will not publicly fund this kind of vile, vicious hatemongering," McDonough told reporters.

Belanger did not commit to asking for the money back.

Peter Soumalias, a Toronto businessman who helped bring the show to the city, said the sketch was just a joke and called the furor a "tempest in a teapot."

"Quebec is the home of some great comics and comedians," he said. "They understand comedy."

No one at NBC was available for comment.

The complaints over the puppet's comments come on the heels of a similar uproar following criticism of European French-Canadian hockey players on CBC television by the country's best-known sports commentator, Don Cherry.

The "Late Night" show, which taped in Toronto all this week and featured guests such as Jim Carrey (news) and Mike Myers (news), was broadcast in Canada by CHUM television, which said it regretted any offense that may have been caused.

"We offer our apology and assurance that it is never our intention to air programing that offends any of our viewers," the station said in a statement.

Triumph the Insult Comic Dog has landed in trouble before, most famously when it had an altercation with rap singer Eminem (news - web sites) at a music awards show in 2002.

I have fond memories of Canada. The first time I visited there (in 1976, by cheap train), the family we stayed with in Ontario watched their TV station sign off (after The Tonight Show) and stood up in their living room for the Canadian National Anthem. Of course as ragged and road weary as we were, we stood up too. I never forgot that!

LOL.....Once, my band played on a "Battle of The Surf Bands" and there was a band from Toronto there. They did a Surf version of "Oh Canada", arranging it just like "Walk Dont Run" by The Ventures. It was so awesome.

Having lived in Detroit all my live, I've always felt a certain affinity for our neighbors to the north (or due south, if you're in downtown Motown). The CBC, "Mr. Dressup", Gordon Lightfoot, Don Cherry, "O Canada"...I say in all sincerity that I feel richer for having been exposed to these things, and seeing my own country from a little bit of a friendly outsider's perspective.

That said, folks need to lighten up. It's *comedy*, for pity's sake. And good-natured cross-regional ribbing is hardly unprededented in either Canada or the U.S.

Our government is currently in the middle of a $200,000,000 scandal and they're worried about this?

No, no. You got it backwards. It's the same thing here (but worse): your government wants YOU to worry about this so you forget about the $200,000,000 scandal.

I know. The age of electronic media!

JFK would have been in BIG trouble with all his nonsense and womenizing if he had this media coverage!

Ed Bishop Incredibly, I'm still here

What's bemusing--even a little sad--about something like this is that, in this 21st century of instant news and everything else, the real problems and issues are shunted aside and under the proverbial rug, while something this trivial--and it is very, very trivial!--becomes a media event.

Now, I love Canada--my mother's Canadian, a good reason!:D--but even if that weren't so, I've been there at least a dozen times in my life, and always met nothing but kind, friendly, helpful folks....and that includes French-speaking Quebec. For someone to be offended by a skit done in obvious jest(think Terence & Phillip on SOUTH PARK), what the fuss is about is beyond me. It seems every ethnic or special interest group is so ultra-sensitive to the littlest thing that nobody can laugh at themselves anymore, they just play the victim of much ado about absolutely nothing.

What the hell is wrong with people? Most of us have, at one time or other, been called some pretty nasty, rotten names and been tarred and trashed somewhere, yet when you just laugh it off and move on, nothing further usually comes of it. Making mountains out of molehills has become a modern curse, a hysteria unworthy of the time invested.

I watched that show and thought it was hilarious. I live in Vermont, 90 miles away from Montreal, and my personal opinion is that most Quebecker's are very rude to one if they know you are American. On the other hand, Montreal has a great night life, and is a notorious party town, and is incredibly clean for a big city.

I can vouch for that: for a half dozen years in the mid to late 70's, my folks used to take me on vacation up to a resort in the Laurentian mountains. It was more in the larger cities that we were warned the natives could be rude to us, but quite honestly, I don't think we ever ran into this to any extent. (We'd been to Quebec City and Montreal on side trips, usually the week before or after our week's stay at the resort.) In the smaller towns, the natives were always nice, and I have only good memories of our vacations in Quebec. One of my memories, in fact, was driving home and seeing a lot of traffic on the 401 heading toward Montreal in 1976 on the day we were leaving. This was when Montreal hosted the olympics.

In answer to the Q about why the Canadians have gotten their knickers in a knot about this - simple - when it comes to multicultural matters our government (feds and provincials) have no sense of humour at all. Very serious, very dour, and very time and money consuming.

...and Don Cherry breathes a sigh of relief as the attention shifts to the insult comic dog puppet that the French are convinced is dictating popular opinion.

As a US citizen, I am actually kind of relieved that we have some company in our absurdity.

I saw a live taping of Conans show a year or so ago and Simon Cowell was the guest. Triumph came out and started ripping on him. SC obviously has a good sense of humor because he seemed to enjoy the bit. Later when I watched the broadcast, I noticed that some of Triumphs best put downs were edited out. "....your show (american idol).....should be renamed British Homo!" Everyone was in stitches. This leads me to believe that there are lots of brutal things triumph says that we'll never get to see.

Did anyone catch last weeks real time with bill maher when he made comments about southerners and many of them got pissed(check out his message board)? Why is it some people can't laugh at themselves? Do you think there's a similarity between canadians and rednecks?

I love Canadians, well, except for the rednecks.

Canada just wants us to go back to making fun about Mexico, but that's politically incorrect now. Canada has enough white guys that they are still on our list of countries that we are allowed to make fun of.

If any politicians are reading, those are jokes.
