Anybody have a really good source, or is well versed in the Canterbury progressive/psychedelic family tree.

I'm a bit late to the party. About two years ago I fell hard for this genre/era...lapping up SHM CDs from Caravan, Soft Machine, Curved Air, Camel, and related like Focus etc.

I would say go for the book Electric Eden: Unearthing Britain's Visionary Music. I picked it up secondhand, thinking it a bargain at £4. Cost me a bloody fortune since.

This, or something like it, was included in the booklet for Soft Machine's Triple Echo compilation. Lots of great info:

That comes from the first volume of Pete Frame's Rock Family Trees which, together with all the other volumes (5 in all), is really interesting stuff.

Should be available on Amazon (it is in the UK)

Have a look at the Pete Frame The Complete Rock Family Trees. There's a nice Soft Machine family tree in there with links to Kevin Ayers, Caravan, Hatfield & The North and Matching Mole, but that's just part of the story. My copy published in 1993.

The "Triple Echo" (LP) version was the size of an LP gatefold inner sleeve (~24" x 12'), Frame says he simplified the version you show but the small print's too hard for me to see what he left out.

ETA: I see he left out all the Gong tree for one thing.

This is an invaluable website if you want to get info about the genre.
