Cats the Movie: It’s the end of the world.

 

The idea of Swift doing this is admirable. In theory it seems like a good fit. The early returns based on the trailer are, for the most part, pretty harsh though.

 

Normally, a studio does backflips when an upcoming film becomes the #1 most-discussed topic on Twitter. Not in this case...

People hate this thing.

Eh, it's a series of loosely-connected sketches, and there are a thousand Broadway musicals that did the same thing with great success. Did I mention that it won a whopping 8 Tony Awards, including Best Book (which is to say, the script), Best Musical, Best Score, and quite a few others? Funny how they'd give an award to a Broadway musical that had no story.

Whether you or I care for it doesn't change the fact that it was a massive success as a stage musical for almost 40 years. But: that doesn't mean it'll make a good movie.

 

I have a bad feline about this movie. I think it's going to be a cat astrophe. Meowuch. I should stop right meow...

The stage show is interactive. The audience is constantly being harassed by actors dressed up as cats. No idea how they'll handle it on film.

The cat who sings Memory holds the whole thing together. No matter what other cat is featured she is always being commented on or walking around in the background.

 

I saw the singing kitties musical back in the day, and thought it was utterly stupid and self-indulgent, as if it was made for the actors rather than the audience.

As for this moofie ... I'm not getting an uncanny valley vibe (compared to The Polar Express for example) but a furry vibe. Why would I want to watch furries singing and prancing on the big screen?

The official trailer for the movie has a lot of dislikes.

I think I remember Letterman talking about it being creepy on his show, that's always my first thought Cats.

 

Midnight and the Kitties are sleeping.....that was hilarious.

I just watched the trailer. Then I remembered why I've always been a dog person.
Cats are for spinsters.

 

Women like cats because they’re sneaky mean spirited and sadistic. Enough said.

 

It looks like such a dreadful mess of ideas that aren't going to cohere, and the all-star cast stinks of show biz maneuverings. James Cordern? Taylor Swift? Jennifer Hudson? Ian McKellan? Only a deal-making money whore would think putting all these people in THIS film would be a good idea.

I've never felt compelled to see the stage musical, but I think I would have much preferred a cast of talented unknowns with a couple of stars leading, and a style that intentionally built on the stagey artifice of the theatre. This is going to be a big, stupid, carefully polished turd.

It’s cats that look like people, or people that look like cats. It was always going to be a freaky weird thing. It’s not as bad as I thought it might be.

Am not going to watch it in a month of Sunday’s though. Furries, furries everywhere.

 

Years ago, a columnist for the local paper wrote a really funny story about his wife dragging him to see it. He basically said it was a female thing.
There was general ennui slowly rising to a fever excitement pitch when she sang 'Barbara's song.'
I asked a woman who saw it once and all she could remember was 'Barbra's song.'

 

"Barbara's song" meaning "Memories", I guess?

Why is it referred to as "Barbara's song"?
