Presumably she first heard the song via Barbra Streisand’s recording.

I first heard "Memory" sung by Barry Manilow. I guess I should call it be calling it "Barry's Song." :p

    Oh.

Well, if that's the case, the misspelling of "Barbra" threw me off.

Not saying that to be pedantic, but if I'd seen "Barbra's Song", I probably would've put 2 and 2 together to realize a Streisand cover was under discussion.

"Barbara's song" left me befuddled since no one named "Barbara" sang it in the original cast - it was "Betty's Song"! :)

Didn't know Streisand did a cover of "Memories" - I guess it was a hit?

Be nice if Sir Lloyd-Webber would put song this song in the movie.

Yes, her version came out a year after Cats premiered. She even had an album called Memories (the song is called “Memory”). It looks like it wasn’t a big pop hit but it was big enough in the easy listening world (big enough to make it “Barbara’s Song” for one lady!)

Barbra Streisand's version didn't make the top 40, but Barry Manilow's did!

I think his version goes "Life was beautiful then…."

Call it "Memory", call it "Memories" - it'll always be "Midnight and the Kitties Are Sleeping" to me! :D

    From Wikipedia:
Why do I get the feeling this was written by a diehard Barbra Streisand fan?

That would have made too much sense.

Even furries are supposedly hating this thing.

Looks to me like they mo-capped dancers and pasted the actors' faces onto them. The trailer has that "extreme CGI" look about it.

Cats is the weirdest show. I don’t know how it ever became such a hit... it has essentially no story, it's just a series of songs about different cats. With no narrative or real characterization it doesn’t inspire any sort of feeling. And I’ve listened to Jesus Christ Superstar and Evita a million times since I was a kid but Cats only has one memorable tune in it.

Thanks. Like I said, I saw it on a small screen, so "Uncanny Valley" anomalies will be tougher to discern there.

Why not just put them in costumes? Worked on stage!

As BeatleJWOL just said, "That would have made too much sense."

I think the filmmakers rightly thought that too much time had passed to merely do a film version of the stage show. So instead, we get … this.

I understand Dr. Moreau was the technical advisor on the film.

I don't think they should've shot a fairly straight adaptation of the stage production - they can jazz it up in a wide variety of ways.

Just not sure why they figured mo-capped cats were the way to go.

Maybe the characters will act in ways impossible for humans?

They made a video of the entire stage play many years ago with an all star cast, so it has already been done.

Your seeing a different play than the rest of us?

Since they made a excellent video of the actual play, it it is not going to get much better or any more real.

I am very familiar with the play, but I can not see this happening as a movie.

Yes, it is just a bunch of songs about different cats.

    Lots of "memorable" excellent songs.

You probably didn't pick up JC Superstar from only hearing it a couple of times. It is an extremely complex work.

So is Cats, which is based upon a book of poems about such cats, as written by T.S. Eliot.

Any time, Hollywood gives us an all-star cast, it doesn't look like we can expect much in way of acting, performance wise.

This is a play that is was a success, based on raw talent, not famously known personalities.

The play is almost non-stop dancing from beginning to end and requires professional dancers to pull it off.

This is a dance sequence from the video, it is at the end of the 1st act.

If there's an opportunity to make more money, and also push the art and science of CGI animation further than it's ever been pushed before, Disney will do it. It has nothing to do with what you want or what I want -- it's more a question of business and technology. (And I'd say the business side carries far more weight.)

F.Y.I. Here is a link to all of the songs of the play, the full musical on stage in order.

You would have thought that they would have gained some insight on stupidly expensive CGI obsessed movies that have little interest to the general public?

I notice that both and Star Wars have the same December 20th release date.

Gee, I wonder which one will be #1 for the opening weekend?

Cats might even come in at number two, just from catching the overflow from Star Wars.

Even before the play starts there's cats amongst the audience and in the interval there's different cats mingling with paying customers.

All the songs from the original stage production (except Memory) were based on TS Eliot's Old Possum's Book of Practical Cats. That's why the story is so loose.

Never saw them before the play starts.

They are out during intermission, usually raising money for a charity.

Yes, I'm familiar with the poems.

A L Weber rules even the most amateur productions with an iron hand. The interactive cats have to be certain cats (you're not going be seated next to Mister Mistoffelees) and in the original production a particular song is sung but in all 21st Century productions its rapped. If the actor sang the song without permission ALW would pull the show.
