In the past, I've always looked forward to getting the Black Friday sales papers to see what great deals could be had on TV/MOVIE DVD SETS and cd box sets.

As I browsed the papers(and on-line ads) this year, I realized that those days are almost gone. I saw several deals for LPS, but other than the Barnes & Noble 40% off, I was pretty bummed.

    Yes, sad.

It’s a business model wherein there are small profit margins for even smaller sales numbers, for product that only a few stores bother to carry anymore, because consumers aren’t interested to spend their money on merchandise that they can obtain for much cheaper elsewhere, or even for free.

SO much is now available to stream that it doesn't make financial sense for companies to invest too much in physical media.

Companies like Flicker Alley and Criterion are specialists that focus on digging deeper into a film or more esoteric subjects. They're worth seeking out, but you won't find them in newspaper ads.

  4. Retail stores never liked carrying media that much due to the tight margins but tolerated them because they drew a lot of foot traffic. Now that people under 40 couldn't care less about physical media, corporate retail doesn't have to pretend anymore.

I remember one of the best Black Friday deals about 20 years ago when Circuity City priced every CD they carried under $10, when that price meant something.

I think this forum is far better for pointing out deals than Black Friday printed ads. I know I've been checking all these threads regularly the past week and have seen some great things. I've also tried to point out a few great deals I saw on movie sets (HPotter, GoT, etc.) for those that might be interested...

But as almost everyone posting here has noted, times have certainly changed.

Aside from the Import CDs sale via their Ebay store that stacked with the Bay 15% coupon, the only sales I napped on physical music media this year where through various bands direct web stores (Marillion, Phish, etc). Even last year I think I grabbed some LPs from Amazon on a BOGO50% off type deal, but this year they got no buys on my end.

Well if you didn't swoop in with your cash and B&N 40% off CD's + 25% off coupon + 10% member discount, you probably missed out on the best Black Friday ever when it comes to music deals.

I like vinyl . always have , but it's a pain you can't really relax , because end of record !!!
now my cd's are increasing in number , there is a convenience there , and if a good pressing , not to shabby/
we got to get cd sales up . music streaming is low quality. Plus unless you can hold it in your hand you don't own it

Shouldn't we make a comparison of not only new CDs and DVDs to 10 years market, but used CDs and DVDs to 10 years market as well?

I still take advantage of Criterion 50% sales that BarnesandNoble has. For music, I don’t remember seeing any sales for box sets, but I do look for download discounts.
