I completely disagree, they’re all great. Just need proper amplification. And if you don’t have that at hand, normalize the audio files in any digital audio editing software and you’re fine.

Some of the CDs quoted in this thread are so quiet that I literally can't even turn them up to my preferred volume on my iPod

Some CD's just are naturally really much quieter than a lot of others, I can't fault anyone for finding it a minor annoyance

The only time I find it an issue is in the car when they pop up on random play on my mp3 card. You crank the volume for Steely Dan or Toto, then get deafened by whatever follows. Soon learned never to put Oasis on the car rotation!!!

Well, in that case one could use Nero Wave Editor to raise the volume.

Right, and I do something similar with my DAW if I come across an album as such - although doing that means it definitely qualifies for "CDs mastered with the volume too low" if you have to import it into an audio editor lol

Listening right now the CD again to check.
I'm thinking isn't a problem of low mastering, is that it was recorded this way.
    Anyway it's better than loud

Normally I'd agree, but Sign O The Times is so quiet I've often maxed out my headphones while out walking, and it struggles against the traffic. Or in a random playlist, it just vanishes. Don't have that issue with other albums of his.

Wouldn't the iTunes level management mitigate this?

Same here. Like when travelling on a bus or train and the background noise just overpowers it. Fortunately I can raise the volume using software etc but not everyone is able to do/knows how to do this. Plus it can be a little time consuming...

I generally like the old WEA masterings but I have a good powerful amp that they probably suit. I do remember in the 90s finding it unbelievable how quite the pre remaster Neil Young - Harvest CD was.

Well, the problem would be noise level when you turn the volume up. Works better with 24 bit audio source.

The original Neroli CD (Brian Eno) has a peak of -13 dB.

Then you must really hate vinyl with a noise floor at least 30 dB higher than a low mastered CD.
