You are right. The DR14 is for the DTS 5.1 rip of the tracks from the DVD. Interesting that the DR plugin actually evaluated that - it must be because I also have the DTS decoder plugin installed. Not sure if the DR14 value for the DTS rip is accurate. Do they master DVD tracks with less dynamic compression because they know it won't go out on the radio or listened to on iPods? It may be misleading because it includes a lot of transition tracks with silly high DR values: Code: -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Analyzed: Jean Michel Jarre / Aero [DTS 5.1] -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- DR Peak RMS Duration Track -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- DR8 -0.70 dB -13.94 dB 0:18 01-Aero Opening DR20 0.00 dB -22.33 dB 0:33 02-Scene 1 DR11 0.00 dB -13.89 dB 7:12 03-Oxygene 2 DR23 0.00 dB -27.29 dB 0:31 04-Scene 2 DR12 0.00 dB -13.01 dB 3:10 05-Aero DR14 -0.22 dB -18.16 dB 1:25 06-Equinoxe 8 DR11 0.00 dB -13.35 dB 4:17 07-Oxygene 4 DR12 0.00 dB -16.00 dB 0:32 08-Scene 3 DR13 0.00 dB -14.44 dB 4:13 09-Souvenir Of China DR20 0.00 dB -24.35 dB 0:50 10-Scene 4 DR10 0.00 dB -11.37 dB 3:00 11-Aerology DR14 -0.07 dB -21.47 dB 0:39 12-Scene 5 DR11 0.00 dB -13.31 dB 6:08 13-Equinoxe 3 DR12 -11.85 dB -28.66 dB 0:26 14-Scene 6 DR12 0.00 dB -14.45 dB 5:39 15-Equinoxe 4 DR17 0.00 dB -20.36 dB 1:06 16-Scene 7 DR11 0.00 dB -13.30 dB 4:41 17-Last Rendez-Vous DR10 0.00 dB -15.53 dB 0:27 18-Scene 8 DR13 0.00 dB -14.57 dB 3:35 19-Zoolookology DR12 -4.99 dB -23.38 dB 0:12 20-Scene 9 DR14 0.00 dB -17.27 dB 4:51 21-Aerozone DR20 0.00 dB -31.48 dB 0:16 22-Scene 10 DR11 0.00 dB -13.62 dB 5:42 23-Magnetic Fields 1 DR17 0.00 dB -21.12 dB 0:16 24-Scene 11 DR13 0.00 dB -15.48 dB 6:12 25-Chronology 6 DR11 -0.22 dB -13.58 dB 7:42 26-Rendez-Vous 4 (Live Version) -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Number of tracks: 26 Official DR value: DR14

How did you extract all of those little foo_dr.txt files into a sorted list after you scanned your library? I use Unix all the time to do things like that, but don't know how to do it in Windows. Need to copy (catenate) all the foo_dr.txt files from the subdirectories into one file and then use something like grep to extract the dr value for the albums, and then sort the list. Might not be too easy, though looks like you figured a way.
The one CD I own that's troublesome to listen to due to what I would describe as its generous dynamic range is a standard Warners pressing (WG, I think) of Rickie Lee Jones' "Pirates".
Yeah, I am a bit of a computer nerd. "Software Engineer" (programmer) by profession. In this case I used Total Commander and XEmacs. I find that Total Commander allows me to do many of the things that I would do from the command line in Unix. If you ever used Norton Commander, you will know what Total Commander is/does. You should be able to use 'findstr' from a windows cmd prompt to search the foo_dr.txt files. It's the windows equivalent of grep, and it even does regular expressions. Try 'findstr /?' for help.
you beat me to it... I own four of their albums and all four have fantastic sonics and dynamic range.
Now, I can add another one: The world's first "purist" recording of pop/rock music, recorded directly to stereo with no overdubs, no PA system for the vocals and no compression! Jason Vitelli's "Confluence". Best regards, Barry www.soundkeeperrecordings.com www.barrydiamentaudio.com
Yes, that's a very dynamic disc. A couple of loud drum beats in "We Belong Together" and "Traces Of The Western Slopes" bring the rest of the music down to an extremely low level. Very annoying on portable players. Also, Mofi's SACD sounds much better.
Do you sell a lot of CD's? My guess is most would be purchasing the various high res versions. Btw, I bought the 192k version and it is very dynamic and present. The only problem is that it makes my speakers seem to go away and all I hear is the music, as if I was there in the room with the players.
One I never see mentioned Ani DiFranco "living in clip" live album. I think, but am not sure, that they used NO compression at all during this recording.!!
Hi Doug, It is a pretty even split between CDs and the high res versions. In the latter, more folks go for 192 than for 96. Thank you Doug! (The words don't adequately express my gratitude.) Not only is this my goal but it is a "problem" I would very much like to see occurring with more recordings. ;-} Best regards, Barry www.soundkeeperrecordings.com www.barrydiamentaudio.com
Cool! So do you have any High-DR albums that are not in my list? I am always looking to get more high-DR music that fits my tastes.

That's a rock album? Other than the classical/instrumental stuff cited here, which I think is predominantly more dynamic, I'd say that the original ABBA - The Visitors CD is very dynamic.
