I just added two Eric Clapton albums in 96kHz / 24bit to the DR database, that I bought at ProStudioMasters. Good dynamics on both.

Comes to my mind the Rage Against The Machine first album; the very first CD pressing, year 1992. Talking about dynamics, the opener "Bombtrack" is devastating. First time I listened to it, I got my speakers almost blown. Great dynamic From the guitar-bass intro to the explosion of the drums and vocals.

This is a very cool topic. How I could check the DR on my cds? What software do I need in order to do this? Thanks!

Has anyone spent much time trying to understand what actually causes a DR to measure high? I guess you have to look at complete traces.

I have live recordings that measure high, and I could swear that it is due to loud applause.

There are micro dynamics and macro dynamics. Classical stuff has a lot of macrodynamics - long quiet parts and long loud parts. Rock and pop cds would be more of a micro-dynamic measurement. From what little I have seen, it seems to correlate to how compressed or uncompressed drums are presented.

Anybody look at the details within a DR rating?

Good CD and the new 2016 CD mastered by our host from the original 1/2" analog tape is even more dynamic!

There's a 1992 US promo LP that is off the frigging hook (ZAS 4832). Crazy dynamics. I don't know if the standard US 1st pressing LP uses the same mastering or not, but that promo is one very-serious slab of vinyl.

I still need to get the new SACD... Been focusing on changing residences, so money's tight right now.

    RATM's S/T debut is a very-well-recorded album. Very-dynamic.

The amount of low frequencies in a recording can alter those DR readings.

I would guess tighter bass would have more of an effect on the DR number than 'droning' low bass notes?

In short, bass fills space. Think of it along these lines: the mids and highs are akin to the walls of a canyon, and the low frequencies are a river flowing through those walls. Less bass energy would equate to a lower water level with the canyon walls peaking further above the surface of the river. (Thus, a higher DR number according to the Dynamic Range Database.) More bass energy would equate to a higher water level with more of the canyon walls (the midrange and highs) becoming submerged. Hence, the peaks wouldn't be quite so high. (Thus, a lower DR number according to the Dynamic Range Database.)

More bass = lower DR. Who 'da thunk it?

For short term micro dynamics, what instruments have the type of energy that commonly cause DR numbers to be high. I'll stick with drums and applause. I don't think a guitar, vocals, or cymbals could.

What I'm getting at are these questions: Can the person doing the mixing increase the dr of a live album by boosting the applause? Can this same person boost the dr by making the drum track louder?

All of this stuff is relative. So yes, if the (analog or digital) master hasn't been subjected to any compression/limiting then a drum-heavy mix will probably register as being more dynamic than if the drums were mixed further back with the other instruments. Again, this is all relative. So many things can alter the final outcome.

As for applause? I think that would depend on the size of the audience. Twelve people applauding is not going to sound the same as 12 thousand people applauding.

Maybe just Google for another one? I use the stand-alone TT Meter on my Mac. It was quite difficult to find, but it is out there…
Also search this forum. There are a couple of threads on measuring DR and the DR database. You probably have to use something like "dynamic range measure" because "DR" would return every thread with album DR figures.

I recently bought this album and it really pops. Drums are very dynamic and punchy. Track # 1, 2, 4, 6 and 10 sound hopping-popping!
Notice the max peaks. This album is not influenced by the loudness war ... and it is "only" DR13 as an album.
