The 2011 remaster of The Wall sounds really good, i have the 2016 reissue. the packaging scratches the discs though

Maybe, but 1990 CD (the one with preemphasis) had somehow more DR, and it sounded great. Didn't A/B compare them yet though.

I think that they kept it just "so" as to work fine with no damage if one is listening nice and loud but not being abusive. I love the fine line the whole album walks.

If anyone is looking for some great '70s inspired laidback rock, check out the Australian band Ocean Alley.

When I heard their latest album, "Lonely Diamond", I was surprised at its dynamic, open sound. I looked it up on the DR database and it measures DR11, so that explains why. Very unusual for a modern release to be mastered so well.

the original Braveheart soundtrack cd had some ridiculous dynamic range. there's one track that i used to curse everytime i forgot to turn it down when the bagpipe bombastics start. and the orchestral track freedom sounds great at the climax.

i do believe the new remastered cd is superior, although the bombastic section is reduced to fit better. I'm honestly not sure if that was the original mix restored, or if they also cursed enough to finally change it. it isn't noticeable at all that anything is different if you weren't aware. so both are great, but the original pushes the dynamics, at least between sections, much further. inner-track dynamics seem comparable.

David Arnold's Independence Day and Stargate score cds are about the same also. excellent to blast at a decent volume. :)

A Was Not Was What Up Dog CD reportedly has a DR of 14 with the songs ranging from 12 to 18.
Album details - Dynamic Range Database

I happened to spot that when listening to "Walk the Dinosaur" and thinking the sound quality unusually good. I have a theory that DR affects the average listener's enjoyment greatly and is a big factor in why some songs are hits.

So basically just for everybody's info, vinyl is way better than cds, which would explain why you struggle to get decent pressings

Vinyl is better for you! I could make a giant list of the problems I have with vinyl and they’re far more troublesome than finding a good digital copy, for me! Digital music forever erased SO MANY problems I had with records growing up. To each his own.
