Challenge to Music Lovers: The Great Rock Discography Survey

Background:
On the last few pages of the 1995 edition of Martin C. Strong's "Great Rock Discography," the author asks, "Which are the greatest artists & songs?' He then establishes criteria for answering the question, shares his selections, and encourages readers to take his challenge: Compile their own list and mail it in. In subsequent printings and updated versions of the book, nothing came of it -- perhaps no one bothered replying. But the concept is both enlightening and frustrating.

Other Lists Using the Criteria:
I've pasted an updated version of my choices on my profile page, but encourage others to compile their own list and post it here. This survey is not a perfect concept for a message board forum, because it takes quite a bit of time and thought to compile. But those with the time and temerity to share their choices will undoubtedly bring to the surface some outstanding stuff others of us may have missed.

Conclusion:
It's quite a challenge. Most might say it's a sadistic waste of time. The regimented, static formula forces the respondent to think, mull, pare, preen, modify, change & seriously contemplate not only what their favorites bands are, but which are their best cuts. I've read about 4 dozen lists other people have compiled using Strong's strict criteria. Under the concept the cream always rises to the top, in every case I've discovered something that I've either missed or overlooked.

Do John Lennon and John Lennon and the Plastic Ono band count as separate bands? What about Paul McCartney and Wings, are they different?

I might try, but I can rarely agree with myself what my "favorite artist" is at any given time. We shall see.

 

Interesting idea, decent criteria, but I'm quite sure my list would change every day.

You can count em as one or two entities. Strong lumped Neil Young and Crazy Horse collaborations under one position.

Potato/poetahtoe I suppose, but it's really a lot more enlightening than one of those '1000 whichevers you must whatever before you die' type lists.

A static snapshot of 50 bands/200 tracks encourages others to both go back and re-listen to stuff they might've skimmed over, or look into something they completely missed.

 

I'll try and give this a go. It'll give me something to do in my lunch hour tomorrow (...and the day after that... and the day after that… )
