It is always a thrill when you find a boutique/rare title at a bargain price. I once found the 3BD Region A DigiBook of Blade Runner 30th anniversary CE for 50p. I already had a copy, so I gave it to my father-in-law, who gets most of my DVD/BD castoffs. It is OOP and much-prized by U.S. collectors.
Southland Season 1-4 7€ The DVD is uncensored, the web versions are with bleeps every few seconds. "What the *bleep*?" - unwatchable! I didn't know that this was still a thing.
My best DVD charity shop find is going back a year or more now, but it was the Live Aid box set. Cost me a fiver, which sounds expensive for 4 DVDs - until you see the prices on the secondary market.....
I hear ya about the damaged CDs/DVDs, but fortunately, I rarely run across it-Usually not on anything I'm considering buying... There have been a few times I thought it might be something I'd want, but when I looked at it, it was too scratched up, so I left it behind. There have also been a couple of instances where I seen a title I thought I'd might like and there was no disc in the case at all... I've had that happen with both CDs and DVDs. Once in awhile, the shelves might get a little messed up/unorganized, but overall, the thrifts I shop at keep things pretty tidy, so fortunately I don't run across the mess(es) you seem to encounter. I buy the occasional new DVD at Walmart, mostly from their $3.74 bins, but a few off the shelf at regular price... I also found a few good deals at Barnes and Noble in their reduced shelves-I'm a B&N member, so I get 10% off the reduced price, plus they usually send coupons in the mail, so I can use those in addition to my 10% off, so I get good deals once in awhile.
Found the two-disc Jimi Hendrix Live at Woodstock DVD at Goodwill yesterday ($1.99). I had never seen this at a thrift before, so I thought I'd pick it up. Even though it's not particularly hard to find, the lady behind me in the line to pay was more impressed than I was. "Wow, that's great deal on that! Nice find!"
That's a coincidence-Not three weeks ago, I found the same title, at a local Goodwill store, for the same price. I'm not a huge Hendix fan by any stretch, but like some of his stuff and thought I'd take a chance on it for that price... Did yours still have the little booklet/liner notes with it? (Mine did.) It's not too often that I find any music related DVDs at the thrifts, and if there are any, it's usually someone I'm not interested in. My best music find at a thrift was "The Beatles-the First U.S. Visit" still sealed for a buck.
How much more great could that be? The answer is none. None more great. Did you get a copy or can I assume you already have one?
Yesterday I found a copy of North By Northwest - $1! A great score a number of years ago was two Criterions: Ed Wood and Passion of Joan of Arc - $4 total!
This Is Spinal Tap is one of the most common DVD titles I see in charity shops. I’m sure you’ll find more, if you keep looking.
Ocean’s Thirteen, 99p at PDSA: This is a Poundland title, which I passed on at £2, but I’m prepared to give it a punt for less than a quid. I haven’t seen the first 12, so I’ll probably have no idea what’s going on
Past couple of weeks: The Prisoner original series BD - 5.99 Friedkin's Sorcerer, The Warriors Ultimate Director's Edition, Predator 2 - three BD's for $10. Universal Classic Sci-Fi Ultimate Collection 2-volume 6 disc DVD set - 3.99 The Decalogue DVD set - 4.99
Just bought two more for 50p each: Baby Driver (2017) + Almost aka Wendy Cracked a Walnut (Rosanna Arquette film from 1990) Anyone seen/recommend these?
The Wire season 4, 20p Car boot sale, finally got the whole set to watch again. You'll get a good 50p worth of entertainment from Baby Driver.
Yeah, Baby Driver is a smart, fun action-heist flick. I bought my BD from a charity shop for 75p earlier this year.
The films I tend to see most often are: Casino Royale 2012 Star Wars prequels – especially episodes I and II Bridget Jones’s Diary Hobbit/Lord of the Rings Taken Pirates of the Caribbean Inception Independence Day
1 - 10 & 12 are carp. 11 is the best if you sea a copy; you'll be in for a real trout. 13 may be a bit deep for you.
I go to the goodwill wholesale. DVDs and Blu-rays are $.59 a pound. I jettison the cases for my folders and just take them home in stacks. That’s about 50 DVDs for a dollar. People throw them away right and left along with their CDs. I get CDs for the same price. Needless to say I am overrun with media at the moment. My advice to young people is dont throw them away because there’s going to be a CD revival , sure as vinyl. I’m sure of that, because for the next 40 years there will still be many mountains of CDs and DVDs, the size of Kilimanjaro, floating around this planet. I find it hard to believe all that’s going to go to waste among the “waste conscious” youth
Oh, believe me, I'll definitely, gladly hold onto my CDs (I'm 20 years old). I love vinyl, but if I need an easy, lossless presentation of an album, I'm always glad when I happen to have the CD at hand. This year, things really took off for my CD collection: I got about 150-160 discs in the past months, including a big bag with 100+ albums for a total of 5 bucks. It's a great time to collect CDs - whether or not some of them will fetch $$$ in some years doesn't really concern me. I appreciate the comfort of a CD, the great sound they can reproduce and the wide availability. What's more: of the discs I own, all still play perfectly. My oldest disc is from very early 1983 and still looks and sounds perfect. Rips just fine and sounds wonderful when cranked up. I couldn't imagine my music collection sans those silver discs
