Submarine is an absolute gem. I own an original U.K. quad poster, signed by the director, Richard Ayoade, and obtained from Ayoade’s own personal collection:
I post a bit in Charity shop CD finds but Ive had some great DVD finds too. May last trip the other day I found a Manchester United DVD on the life of George Best, 2 DVD version of Gangs of New York and an unusual one "The Man in the Glass Booth" an American film theatre release. All three for €2.
I haven't seen the rest of these, but I love 'Escape From Alcatraz'... I remember seeing that one theatrically when it was originally released...
The Assassination of Richard Nixon Black Book The Bodyguard Gone in 60 Seconds (remake) The Great Gatsby The Panic in Needle Park Pursued Raising Arizona Roman Holiday Slaughterhouse-5 The Talented Mr. Ripley The Vanishing (original) These were 50p each. Any thoughts?
I am not expecting much from The Bodyguard but it can be fun to watch films that were a “big deal”, if only to work out why.
I didn't think it was bad. To each their own I guess, but the series started out as a tragedy anyway.
I have no thoughts on the films themselves, as I've not seen any of them... However, the price you paid seems like you got some bargains, so good for you on that one. At the thrift shop I shop the most, they've now bumped the prices up: Up until roughly July of last year, their DVDs and CDs were $1.25, then got bumped up to $1.38... Now they've bumped them up to $1.85. I get that almost everything is going up in price, but I can't see how they can justify (if my math is right) a 33% jump in price on something they're getting for free anyway. I know they have employees to pay and they need to keep the lights on, but they're not paying for the items themselves, and they have no 'supply chain issues', as people bring the stuff to them...
Half Price Books clearence section ($2 a piece): Lawrence of Arabia Alice In Wonderland (1999) Great Muppet Caper Altered States Robot Chicken Vol 1 (2 disc) Zoolander ----- Simpsons season 8 ($8) Caligula ($8) El Topo ($20) Disney Treasures - Goofy (limited edition tin) ($50)
Once Upon a Time in the West, U.K. BD, £2.00 at Barnardo’s Lawman, German BD, £2.00 at Barnardo’s Not often one finds classic Westerns on BD in chazzas.
Oddly enough, I just watched him in Changing Lanes on Friday – another recent charity shop purchase and a superb film.
No! Lol had most of them. Just three titles 30p. Sad thing is their doing away with dvds ( not enough donations) using the space for more clothes ( girls like to shop/buy ).
That's weird, since in so many of these threads about thrift store shopping for DVDs and/or CDs, people are always saying how the stores they shop have an over abundance of donations and that stores won't take them...
Well maybe this particular store. But .. seems they get more clothes, lotta female ( teen : student types ) shop .. place packed. Dvds were 50p last week. Just getting rid of them. Pity I got loads there some sealed. The odd LP.. cds were 20p last week
I suppose the store thinks they know what they're doing, but I think they're really making a mistake by totally eliminating them from their stock... Next thing you know, there will be 25 estates cleaned out, full of top selling DVDs and CDs, and the people won't have any place to take them if stores are going to act like the one you're talking about... Speaking for myself, if I were in that type of a situation (cleaning out an estate), I'd want to bring all of the stuff to one thrift shop and be done with it: I wouldn't want the store saying 'We'll take that, that, and that, but we're not taking those movies'... I'd say, 'We'll off to the next shop for me...' And as an aside, you mentioned the store dropping the prices of DVDs and CDs to clear them out: The main thrift store I shop has actually bumped their prices up. They're not trying to clear things out of course, but a roughly 33% raise in price isn't very popular with me.
Im throwing away dvds now don’t have the space .. I put a 100 just discs in a shoebox to save space. I’ve seen some places have 3 for a £1.00 or 5 for a £1. same familiar titles.
A really nice find for £10 today, all 21 DVD's are present and in mint condition. "T'was Ever Thus!" Oliver Norvell Hardy.
