Latest buys from Half Price Books were:

    Sleeper - $2
Planes, Trains and Automobiles - $2
    The Commitments (2 disc) - $2
    Cinema Paradiso (2 disc) - $8

& at a Dollar General, not used, a brand new copy but still a good deal:

Mutiny On The Bounty (60s Brando remake) (2 disc) - $5

I love this movie, and this edition has all kinds of featurettes. This will nicely replace my dvdr from a TCM broadcast.

For what I posted above? A little less than $20.00, plus tax... All titles were bought at Goodwill for $1.99 each, with the exception of the last one, which was bought at a different thrift store that charges $1.85 per title.

Another charity shop near me have started selling them at 10p each (about $0.13 - no tax). They are becoming the new VHS tape. Tough to find a title, but they did have All Quiet on the Western Front and The Jazz Singer.

I don't see that happening here anytime soon, though I'd like it a lot if they did-They seem to have a reasonably high turnover, even at the prices they're charging.

And I don't want to turn this thread off subject, so I'll only type about it briefly... You mentioned DVDs becoming the new VHS tapes: The thrift store I shop the most has bumped the price of their stock of VHS tapes three fold plus: They used to charge .55c each, and this month they bumped the price up to $1.85 each, which I find absolutely crazy. My guess is that they've decided to follow Goodwill's practice of having all media (DVDs/CDs/LPs) a flat $1.85 across the board, but I kind of hope it backfires on them... I know there are VHS collectors, and I'll buy one on occasion if it looks interesting, but charging that much for something that doesn't seem to be a super fast moving format just seems crazy to me.

I agree with everyone on this, though 27 Dates seems to be the most common title I see these days. Every store I go to has at least two copies on the shelf, and one has five. Last week was definitely an anomaly for me to find so many titles in my target eras. Here's this weeks haul (if one DVD can be considered a haul), which I would say is a pretty typical week, though I often go weeks without picking anything up.

'The Lost World/Return to the Lost World' (2fer)
    'In Harm's Way'
    'The Mountain Men'
'Victory at Sea' (Collector's Edition/Complete Series)
    'Hatari!'
'WWII: In Color' (5 Films from the National Archives)
    'Hopalong Cassidy-The Complete Series'
    'Laramie-The Complete First Season'
'Pearl Harbor-75th Anniversary' (Commemorative Documentary Series)
    'Yancy Derringer-The Complete Series'*

*'Yancy Derringer' is a TV series I was not/am not at all familiar with... It is missing one of the four DVDs, but since I've never seen the show, and am not even sure if I'll like it or not, I bought it, figuring if I like it enough I can always pick it up again sometime as a complete set.

Also, all of these DVDs (except 'Victory at Sea', which was purchased at a different store) reek of cigarette smoke, and a couple of them had nicotine stains on the cases (which thankfully I was able to wipe off with Spic 'n Span antibacterial spray). I know from reading threads about buying used DVDs and CDs that it's not an unheard of thing, but this is the first time I've ever encountered it. I wiped them down as best as I could, and can only hope time will cause the smell to fade away over time...

GodDAMN, I'd love to come across more classic films like this one on blu ray in the thrifts. The only one I remember finding was the Rat Pack Ocean's 11. I nearly screamed when I saw it, as that's a very rare blu ray in my neck of the woods. Still, only one exception to the rule. No good classics around here, it seems.

I’ve done well with classic Westerns of late, but I maintain that one increases one’s chances exponentially by visiting multiple stores on a regular basis. You have to put the effort in.

I found this BD in a store I visit fairly regularly, where it’s almost always the same, tired old stock time after time. Can’t remember the last time I bought anything from there; must be a year at least. Today, I got lucky, but you make your own luck in this game.

Yeah, I know what you mean. At the moment, I ride the bus to the hospital multiple times a week (when I have some time off, that is) to visit my sister. On the way, there are three shops so I get to check on the inventory quite regularly. Just a few days ago, I got some true goodies after months of nothing.

That’s what it takes: tenacity when you’re seeing the same old crap week in, week out. As a Man United fan, I’m used to it these days.

    I wish your sister well.

I recently found some Spacecraft Films DVD sets: Project Gemini I, The Mighty Saturns and Apollo 8 for $4 each. Not super rare but they've been OOP for quite a few years.

I saw this DVD the other day for 40p (about 50c), but there was a persistent mark on the disc, and I didn't think it would play properly.
