It wouldn't be the same without good ole Charlie Brown.

It must be shown uncut, as they have an hour alloted for it, and it was originally a half hour show - back when there was more show than commercials! (Dolly Madison & Coca-Cola, as I recall)

It's in an hour time slot? Sheez, that's so sad.....

When the FCC was deregulated, the "three minutes per 1/2 hour of commercials" guideline was totally abandoned. Murder!

This'll be celebrating its 40th anniversary in a couple of years! I never miss it--watching it right now!

Most ironic line, in hindsight: "I can't stand it, my own dog, gone commercial!" ;)

I'm just glad they didn't hack it up like CBS did for years squeezing it in a half hour slot. The show ran 31 min and now they are showing some newer crappy CB Xmas special.

I can't see a Dolly Madison package without thinking of Charlie Brown specials. In the 70s Dolly Madison always heavily sponsored those shows on CBS. I even remember "CBS Special Presentation" animation like it was yesterday.:)

How could I have forgotten about Dolly Madison??!! I was telling my wife last night that I remember the show being sponsored by Peter Paul/Cadbury. But now that you mention Dolly Madison, I remember it clearly.

    Aahhh... Memories....

Sort of like Hostess or Little Debbie--little snack cakes that are 90% sugar and 100% bad for you, but probably tasty as hell. :D I don't recall ever seeing them here in Michigan.

I really need to get the DVD of this special. Sure, I have VHS, but I want something more permanent.

Call me a dog, but everyone I know (seriously, everyone), including yours truly, hits the fast forward when Linus says "Lights Please".

BTW, the second Charlie Brown Xmas special is a real dud. It's not even a cohesive story...it always seemed like a few Peanuts skits thrown together. Anyone remember when Shell was giving these away for next to nothing with a full tank of gas?

What was that silly 'new' Charlie Brown they showed after the original special? That thing was strictly for the kids. The animation and the voices were horrible. I just didn't feel like Charlie Brown.

Interesting that the original special was a show that the whole family, even adults, could learn something from. The new special is 'empty' and appears to be written strictly for children.

    What a waste...murder!

Rudy, it's available in a box set with the Halloween special and another one. My wife bought it for her day care, I haven't watched it yet, but I will very soon.

Yep, I got mine at Shell back in the late 80's(?). As soon as I played it I realized why it was Not Ready For Prime Time! No comparison to the classic!

    OK you're a dog, and not a happy-footed white beagle either! ;)

Is it just me, or is the new digital video enhancement too much? The colors are waaaay too bright. Sure, it looks great because it has been redone, but there is a character issue in that there's something missing from the lack of graininess of the original. I dunno, it might just be because I'm not used to it yet, but something is missing in it for me.

Maybe you were too used to the faded out print that CBS ran for years and years. It looked like somethiung that ran off my elementary school film projecter.

It's also available as a single DVD, but I've noticed that a lot of places (such as Target, Media Play and Border's) don't carry anything but the three DVD box set, more or less forcing you to buy the more expensive, packaged for easy gift wrapping, box set. I know before I found my single copy DVD, I got frustrated enough to pop off at one store manager who asked if I needed help by saying "Yes, can you find me a copy of A Charlie Brown Christmas that doesn't force me to buy two other discs that I don't want?"
    :sigh:

By the way, speaking of the soundtrack CD, while traveling last weekend, we stopped at a Starbucks for coffee, and I notice they're selling a version of the CD specially packaged for sale at Starbucks, in a digi-pack, with new artwork, and with both the Starbucks and Fantasy logos on it. It didn't look like there was any difference in tracks, and I'm imagining it's the same master as the standard version, but if you're a collector, you might be interested.

A vinyl album of the classic film was released, possibly on a small label. I had it when I was a kid.

When I was 7 I could recite the whole special from beginning to end. Even beyond "Lights please?" I never saw a Dolly Madison snack cake, but Little Debby does a good job.

How swiftly things changed. When I was young, if you had a Little Debby cake in your lunch box in middle school, you got made fun of. In High School, people paid you twice the price just to snarf it from you. ;)

I remember those Dolly Madison ads vividly, especially the ones with the "Zinger zapper". And Dan C, does this refresh your memory? ;)

Charlie Brown, I've watched it every year since it first aired. One of my X-mas favorites for sure.
