Charlie was the one who wanted this, he even picked out Steve Jordan personally to fill in for him, at least for this upcoming tour.

Has there been an official reaction from The Stones?

What else is Keith going to do? It's what he is, what he does. Like McCartney, Dylan and Stevie Nicks, they'll probably carry him off the stage in a black bag.

Oh man. I really feared this when the initial news of his ill health were reported; as with Dusty Hill of ZZ Top.

RIP Charlie, you gentleman and expert drummer. The beating heart of the Stones.

As Dr. John said, "he was all clued up about the fonk".

So sad to lose the indefatigable Charlie - the heartbeat of the greatest rock and roll band in the world. Keith will be devastated :-(

I agree. A temporary standin drummer may have made sense while Charlie was alive and ostensibly recovering, but I don't think it does now. Even Mick might have the sense to throw in the towel now; I guess we'll see.

This is just terrible news, the likely end of the run for my favorite band. Even if Charlie wasn't able to return to playing, I at least wanted him ALIVE and issuing his sardonic comments about the Stones, life and such!

I had wondered how he was doing when I heard he was sitting out the new tour. But even with that...and being 80...it's just devastating. What an icon! :shake:

RIP. He looked very frail in the last year's stream.

Doubt it's gonna stop Mick and Keith though.

When you're 80, your ticket can be punched at any time.

I knew a guy in his 80s, ex-Marine, looked 50, ripped with muscles, faithful jogger every day. One night he just went to bed and he didn't wake up.

RIP Charlie ... a legend and one of the classiest individuals ever associated with rock music.

Just read the news on Facebook. This is devastating. Sad. I don't even know what to say right now. I love the Stones and Charlie had his very unique way of coolness. His drumming was so elementary for the their sound. So glad I had the Chance to see him live with his buddies on stage a few times.

Goodbye Charlie, thank you for everything . The Stones would never have been the same without you. You will be truly missed.

A fabulous drummer. He had a wonderful swing and distinctive style for a rock drummer.

Too many heroes are leaving us now. Charlie’s up there with the best of them. End of an era. Privileged to have seen them on the last tour and they were still the greatest.
