Remember....the last season wasn't even supposed to happen, and all of the storylines that were wrapping things up during the season before had to be quickly rewritten.....
Not anymore. Netflix and Prime both lost Cheers a few months back. It’s currently on Peacock, Hulu, and CBS All Access.
I think the issue there was, once Shelley Long left, they needed someone to be on the receiving end of Carla's one-liners, so Cliff became her target with Diane gone, but the shots at Cliff were often so mean-spirited. Usually funny nonetheless, but there were times it was like, "jeez, that is a bit harsh." Cliff would occasionally throw the initial barb, but he often just sat there and took it. With Carla and Diane, Diane often gave us good as she got, so it was a good balance.
It was a mis-posted reply to the post about Night Court which YOU were replying to. It has absolutely NOTHING to do with what you wrote.
Love this scene from the earlier seasons... [the gang are talking about predicting who the next president will be] Cliff Clavin: I've got a pet little theory about that. You see, if you go back in history and take every president, you'll find that the numerical value of each letter in their last name was equally divisible into the year in which they were elected. Paul: So who's going to win, Cliff? Reagan again? Norm Peterson: What, Mondale? Cliff Clavin: No, no, not a chance. You see, I figured it out. By my calculations, the next president has to be named Yelnik McWawa. Sam Malone: That's the stupidest name I've ever heard. Ernie 'Coach' Pantusso: Sam, please. You're talking about our next president.
As much as I liked the character I never got why Fraisier hung out at the bar. They also didn't do the show any favors by turning worldly ladies man Sam Malone into a crying puppy trying to hump Rebecca's leg for seasons.
My guess is Frasier hung out their to maybe get Diane back , then he just never left. He was deep down a loser just like the rest of the gang
Frasier was only supposed to appear in four episodes originally IIRC, but Kelsey Grammar was so damn funny that they expanded his role and the rest is history. You could argue that finding ways to keep him at the bar were a bit contrived, but he quickly became my favorite Cheers character, so it was all good by me. As for Sam, he was still quite the ladies man even when trying to score with Rebecca, as he was always dating some hottie or something.
I think Lillith was my favorite My gosh Bebe Neuwirth was brilliant and she was only 26 when she took the role of Lillith
Perfect casting. They could not have found a more perfect significant other for Frasier than Bebe Neuwirth as Lilith. I just hated the storyline in the last season with her cheating on him. It made both of their characters much weaker (her being a cheater, him being so distraught that he faked a suicide attempt by going to the roof). I assume that was their way of getting Frasier single again since his spinoff show was already in the works.
I'd add "Law and Order". The entire cast turned over a few times over nearly 20 years on the air. Of course, L&O was more about the stories and less about the characters. Easier to pull off cast changes for a show like that.
Pretty much the opposite for me. I enjoyed the Diane & Sam back-and-forth, and I was sorry to see her leave the show. I never warmed to the Rebecca character, who I mostly found grating. I watched Season 6 sporadically, and then pretty much stopped. Same thing with syndicated reruns. If it's a Rebecca era episode, I shut it off. It's interesting how everyone's taste is different....
