I’m thinking of the episode where he demonstrates his “specialty” when he played baseball, that of getting hit in the head with a pitched ball to get on base”.

Allyce Beasley was the actress who played the daughter. She had a fine career and was on Moonlighting.

Holy cow - Nicholas Colasanto died at 61. He served in WWII, and maybe that impacted his long-term health.

I actually far prefer the Rebecca years, though seasons 4 and 5 are pretty fun. Idk, the "heart" of the early episodes grates on me, a bit. For the same reason, I don't rate Taxi nearly as high as others do.

I rewatched the first episode recently and was surprised by how well it held up. It was genuinely funny without the usual desperation for popularity new sitcoms have in the first few episodes. It was very obviously written, produced and directed by seasoned professionals.

Watching from the first season episode 1 as a kid, I felt that season 1 was the freshest of all.

Likewise is was my first exposure to the lead characters being put in a "will they or won't they" situation. The producers went with "they will" just in case they got cancelled after the very low rated 1st season.

Fortunately the show went on, but for long term story ideas characters had to evolve..
Sam became "dumber", Norm went from the bar "encyclopedia" to a blowhard "know it all/know nothing", etc.

Episode 1 has the ugliest tongue contest and the sweatiest movie dialogue. It's a classic!

Here's the piece written by Ken Levine, one of the show's writers.

Late in the episode there’s a lovely scene where the Coach has a heart-to-heart with his daughter, Lisa in Sam’s office. It’s clear to everyone (but the Coach of course) that she’s marrying this clown, Roy out of insecurity not love. Lisa tells her dad that Roy thinks she’s beautiful. The Coach says, “You are beautiful. You look just like your mother.” It was meant to touch Lisa’s heart.

We were holding our breaths hoping it didn’t get a big gooey “Awwwwwwww!” Instead it got this thunderous laugh. Applause even. Everyone on the stage was stunned. We shot the scene again, thinking this time they’ll see it differently. Nope. Huge laugh the SECOND time.

Still, when we assembled the show we all felt it hurt the scene and ultimately the story. Kudos to the Charles Brothers for being willing to lift the episode’s biggest laugh to preserve the emotional core of the show.

WTF? I’ve seen the entire run of the show at least ten times (original broadcasts, then DVD, then Netflix) and this scene still puts a lump in my throat every time. There weren’t many serious moments on Cheers but this one is tops IMO.

    “The Buddha” LOL

I don't know what HALLMARK DRAMA is but maybe the name is a clue? I know CHEERS is still on Hulu.

Cheers had some really funny moments in the Christmas episodes.
Frasier's rant on Rudolph is always good for a laugh: "when Rudolph's abnormality proves of service...they use him..."

Other great moments, Frasier's rant on Perry Como and the gang watching It's A Wonderful and everyone fakes crying at the end scene. Woody with his "it always comes on the 25th of December" is great too.

I'm paraphrasing a bit, but I once read an article that basically stated Cheers was the start of a new era in American TV. To wit: April/May 1982, WKRP in Cincinnati and Barney Miller aired their final episodes. September 1982, Cheers and Family Ties make their debut. The '70s were over, and the '80s were underway.
