I have many favorites, so I will just list a few along with a logical pairing for each: A deviant, sexually depraved James Spader Double Feature: Sex, Lies, And Videotapes Secretary Charlton Heston Biblical Double Feature: The Ten Commandments Ben-Hur (1959) Scottish Heroes: Braveheart Rob Roy American Pre-Revolotionary War feature followed by an American Revolutionary War feature: The Last Of The Mohicans (1992) The Patriot
Bad news when quoting myself... However to continue the Python theme how about Monty Pyhon and the Holy Grail with Ben Hur? After all the tagline for Holy Grail is it makes Ben Hur look like an epic!!
Anvil! The Story of Anvil followed by American Movie: two documentaries about the comic struggles to succeed of people whose ambition is greater than their talent. The former is about a longstanding but never very successful Canadian metal band and the latter about a scrappy would-be indie filmmaker, but both are pretty similar.
Recent Faves: Replicant/Maximum Risk (Ringo Lam/Jean Claude Van Damme Twin Movies) Deathstalker/Barbarian Queen (Topless Warrior Chick Flick Night because you gotta once in awhile) Firecracker/Raw Force (Jillian Kessner Naked Fu Double) Lucky/Partly Fiction (Harry Dean Stanton Double) And some great exploitation rip-off doubles: Enter the Dragon/The Lost Empire (basically Enter the Dragon with big boobs. It works!) Die Hard/Skyscraper (Die Hard ripoff with Anna Nicole Smith? Yes please!) Roadhouse/China OBrian (Blatant Roadhouse rip-off with Cyntia Rothrock - should have been a sequel with a zombie Ben Gazarra!) Jaws/Grizzly (Jaws in the forest - almost beat for beat) I think about this stuff way too much...
The Great Escape/TheMagnificent Seven Local Hero/My Favorite Year Do The Right Thing/Malcolm X Merry Christmas Mr Lawrence/Bridge On The River Kwai Slap Shot/Nobody’s Fool Jaws/Jurassic Park My Left Foot/Shine Butch Cassidy & the SundanceKid/The Sting Born On The Fourth Of July/Apocalypse Now MASH/Stripes
The Great Locomotive Chase/Runaway Train Kongo/Memento The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford/Jackie Brown Winter’s Bone/True Grit Reversal of Fortune/Death of Stalin
My fave is Lawrence of Arabia, but can't think of a great double with what is already nearly 4 hours long. But two others from my top ten make a great if depressing Vietnam War double Apocalypse Now/The Deer Hunter I think maybe TDH should go on first.
Billy Liar/Far From The Madding Crowd Mainly for Julie Christie at her most pulchritudinous but if you need another reason, the former inspired Morrissey to come up with the words to William It Was Really Nothing and the latter was referenced in Ray Davies’ Waterloo Sunset.
Some Like It Hot/Seven Year Itch Papillon/Birdman of Alcatraz A Better Tomorrow/Face Off Four Weddings And A Funeral/Death At A Funeral-British version 13 Days/JFK
My friend's son borrowed "American Splendor" from me and I told him he needed to borrow and watch "Crumb" first so he would appreciate his characterization in "American Splendor."
