Here is another favorite Christmas season movie - what was termed a screwball comedy with William Powell and Carole Lombard. William Powell is picked up as a homeless man for a Christmas scavenger hunt! The rest was romantic destiny. Carole was a fine comedienne.
It can only ever be "It's A Wonderful Life" a family tradition that my son has now continued with his family. That movie got me the first time I ever watched it back when I was a kid in the 60s. Yes it's a bit creaky now but by jeezus it pulls at those heartstrings. By the final scene I'm in floods of tears EVERY TIME. Sometimes even talking about it sets me off- totally irrational but the emotion is so strong.
I saw this movie for the first time last year and it really is a period piece. The accents cadence and dialogue are almost alien- it really is amazing how much has changed in the last 100 years. It has a certain charm but I found it hard going and cringey at points but certainly a fascinating movie
I'm in your corner! when I first was able to buy the movie I was thrilled...I bought every different media release at the time. I remember patiently waiting for it to come on TV! which in turn was CUT!
To be honest there is a big saggy section in the middle that I lose interest in- that I'd happily do without. I must admit that I've never been able to watch The Wizard Of Oz all the way through each time I try my concentration wanders off before they reach the Emerald City!
At our house we watch all the Rankin Bass we can find, Frosty, Rudolph, etc. But not Peter Cotton tail, too weird man. Also Charlie Brown, It's a Wonderful Life, and both of Bing's Xmas movies - Holiday Inn and White Christmas. The Santa Clause and sequels are ok. Not a fan of Polar Express, weird edge. Must be forgetting something.
back at ya on all mentioned...I have hundreds of Christmas DVDs before Blu-ray and many never made it to BD.
Love Hard - Almost passed this one up as it wasn't obvious at first that it was a Christmas movie. Cute and predictable, but had some laugh out loud moments.
Your comments / attitude are quite the majority and why most dramas date very quickly, as of course today's dramas will also date 50 years from now. I have made this point elsewhere in explaining why fantasies and fairy tales have much more staying power than colloquial dramas, unless music is added to them that remains interesting to future generations..
we watched this and found it interesting and usual, but we enjoyed it... the main actress reminded me a little of Karen Carpenter! weird, eh?
‘Surviving Christmas’ with Ben Affleck and James Gandolfini is my favorite guilty pleasure Christmas movie. I’ve watched several Hallmark Christmas films the past few weeks and ‘The Christmas Waltz’ with Lacey Chabert was a definite highlight. The waltz performed towards the end of the movie was magical.
