I'm surprised Night Moves isn't on that list...

I didn't think many people listened to FM or AM radio anymore. I was wrong.

I lived in Sydney for two years a few years ago and I can remember an FM station that had amazing programming. I think it was late Thursday nights that they would play 2 to 3 hours of garage rock. Amazing stuff. Nothing like that here in the US unless it’s a low powered college radio station.

Billy Joel has been "oldies" for some time. That's nothing on when I heard "The Sign" by Ace of Base on WAKY in Louisville (which otherwise is a pretty cool oldies station that does go for deeper hits than just the usual suspects), which is 25 years old but the production is way too modern for a station that plays lots of 60s and 70s with a reasonable helping of 80s, but 1994 feels too modern

More so than “Renegade” I think there are more overplayed songs than that one, like “Come Sail Away” for example

There is a station that only plays these songs on repeat

    AC/DC Highway to hell
    Rolling stones Satisfaction
    Scorpions Still loving you
    Boston More than a feeling
Guns n Roses Sweet child o mine and Knocking on heaven door
Queen Bohemian rhapsody and the other hits
    Led Zeppelin Stairway to heaven
Deep Purple Smoke on the water
    Bon Jovi hits

  10. Yeah, of course, being a fan of most of that stuff, I was highly enthusiastic at first. I quickly realized though that it was the same two or three pieces from each band coming around every single week...

Oh yeah, I know. It was at least 15 years ago when this all went down, maybe more like 20. But I'm still not over it. :(

That's why I have an SD card with ~50 GB of music in my phone. It's almost like using an Ipod; I feel so old-school!

Yes, I listen to this station periodically. It's an oddball, in a good way. I have heard the following surprises on this station:

Van Halen - Me Wise Magic
    Van Halen - Humans Being
    King's X - Visions
    Joe Satriani - Headrush
Rainbow - Waiting for a Sign

But they also play a number of the same old songs you hear on most Classic Rock stations, and not the better ones. I'm still hearing post-High Infidelity REO Speedwagon and Survivor.

And they have some oddballs in heavy rotation. I've heard Marilyn Manson's Tattooed in Reverse a bunch of times.

One band that merits classification as “classic rock” artist is Rush. Yet...for some weird reason .... I dont mind listening to their oft-played songs. They just don’t wear me down like all the other dinosaur rock songs out there. Ironically, their biggest hit describes crappy FM radio. Isn’t it ironic ? (my apologies to another Canadian, A. Morisette).

    Begin the day
    With a friendly voice
    A companion, unobtrusive
Plays that song that's so elusive
And the magic music makes your morning mood
    Off on your way
    Hit the open road
There is magic at your fingers
    For the Spirit ever lingers
    Undemanding contact
    In your happy solitude
    Invisible airwaves
    Crackle with life
    Bright antennae bristle
    With the energy
    Emotional feedback
    On a timeless wavelength
Bearing a gift beyond price ---
    Almost free...
    All this machinery
    Making modern music
    Can still be open-hearted
    Not so coldly charted
    It's really just a question
    Of your honesty
    One likes to believe
    In the freedom of music
    But glittering prizes
    And endless compromises
    Shatter the illusion
    Of integrity
"For the words of the profits
Are written on the studio wall,
    Concert hall ---
    Echoes with the sounds...
    Of salesmen."

Where I live the classic rock station basically plays just one Stones tune, "Miss You"...when I hear the opening notes of it for the thousandth time I'm ready to scream!

The only one of their chestnuts that got old for me was Subdivisions.

WKRP in Cincinnati is still pretty good. :D

In Denver, the classic rock is pretty bad. Same songs over and over. And then when they play a deeper cut, I hear it for the next 3 weeks. Weird. I usually only listen in my garage when brewing beer though. KBCO is a decent station. They play a much wider mix of music, although I don't consider them a classic rock station, so that is why they play a better mix of new and older.

I think most streaming services allow you to download songs/albums/playlists for offline playback to avoid data usage. At least Spotify does.

Back in the 1970s, before classic rock was called classic rock, there was an FM station in Connecticut that for years played "Stairway to Heaven" every night timed so it ended exactly at midnight. Back then, it was actually kinda cool. But now, that would go over like a lead (Led) balloon (Zeppelin).
