Chailly box: Thank you so much! I have the Brahms symphonies with Chailly - stunning indeed . Beethoven Warner Box: Harnoncourt symphonies sold them silly of me many years ago - those are very nice. My uncertainty with this set is exactly Kovacevich ! I am perfectly fine with the rest ... just Kovacevich is holding me ... and making me unsure ...
Which is not available yet - the release date has been put back to January 10, as is shown on JPC's site and the sites of other EU stores. I used my coupon for the big Bruno Walter set.
Rmihai0, Despites my reservations about Kovacevich cycle, please let me add that while I still think this should not be "the first choice", nor should it be "the only cycle to have", I still praise very highly these recordings. A have a handful of complete sets of Beethoven sonatas in my collection (Kempf 1950´s, Kempf 1960´s, Arrau, the almost complete Gilels, Gulda...) and Kovacevich is among of them, and I have no intention to get rid of if. It is just not my first nor second choice, but there are moments depending on my mood when its stronger energy fits well and it is among my essencial cycles to have. Then I would definetelly not avoid the Beethoven Complete Edition by Warner just because of it. It would rather be for me one more reason to buy the set Warner set if I did not have this cycle of sonatas in a separated smaller set. What is holding me is rather the duplications... despites Kovacevich, from this Warner Complete set I also have the Perlman recordings, Jacqueline Dupré and some others. regards, DB
I was a little confused about the offerings, but especially duplications, on the Bruno Walter box, so I did a quick spreadsheet using the Amazon photo of the index on the back of the box as a guide. Below is the list, sorted by Composer, then Work, and finally CD number. I wanted the Bruno tribute CDs to show up last, so I used the letter "Z". I have much of the material on this box and I'm not obsessed with Beethoven enough (sacrilege) to want the rest of it. Instead, I bought Warner's Barenboim Beethoven box If you want the most detailed discussion of what's on the new Warner box in comparison with the other new boxes, there's this discussion thread: Google Groups
What's up with the Bruno Walter box set? Anyone knows? I preordered it from Amazon back in August. It was supposed to come out in November, then December 6, I just checked a moment ago and now it shows Jan 5 -Feb 6?
It did come out on November 22 in Europe (I got my copy last week), but there seems to be some delay in North America.
Using the list that @cdgenarian posted, I used red to indicate compositions that are also in the 'Edition' box. Recording specifics are absent so you can't get too detailed with this. Also I provide no indication of anything that might be unique to the 'Edition' box. FWIW. I would agree entirely with DEVA's assessment of the Kovacevich cycle. It should not be your only set of the Beethoven sonatas, but it's an essential one, like Annie Fischer's. I couldn't do without Arrau, and Kempff, Brautigam and Gulda are at the top of the heap so far as I'm concerned. I'm also developing a strong fondness for Angela Hewitt's cycle, which due to her Bach background emphasizes the transition from the Baroque elements still found in the early sonatas to the Classical to the early Romantic superbly.
Someone on another classical forum said Sony Classical's distribution to the US is a bit delayed compared to Europe (sounded like he/she had some inside knowledge). I've noticed the US retailers will run out of stock on Sony boxes while Europe will have them for weeks later until theirs is depleted too and then the set is out of print. I would put money on Amazon US getting theirs at some point, I'm not cancelling my preorder
Thanks, I looked at the Target and their price is the same as Amazon but they show a delivery date of Dec 11. I placed an order but did not cancel my Amazon preorder yet. I will if the one from Target arrives earlier. I am really hoping to be able to listen to the set during the holidays.
The various US prices of the Walter set are much lower than any I've seen on EU sites, that's probably why most US members here ordered their sets from domestic stores. I hope for them that it doesn't go the way of the Szell set, which was available for only a very limited time.
Any U.S. customers receive the Bruno Walter CompleteColumbia box from Amazon? I ordered a while back--it shows "released December 6th." But no shipping or no nothing so far.
As it is in US/Canada - I am personally not necessarily finding the Walter's Box set prices attractive ... Maybe is just me ... but they will need to fall at least another 15% for me just to look at it ... Otherwise I will live happily ever after with my vinyl.
I eventually ordered today this "Callas-Remastered-Complete-Recordings-1949-1969" (Maria Callas) This ordering surprised even myself, since I am one who wrote here some time ago that the timbre of her voice was not to my taste. So what happened? Well, after reading this post by "Michael H" quoted above (with this not-bo-be-missed price), and after a warm indication from a colleague in other forum, and curious to understand why the rest of the whole world praise her so highly, I´ve been sampling and listening in the past weeks. I´ve listened specially this 4-hour long video on Youtube with 50 arias (and I must confess several of the arias I repeated 4 or 5 times so good they are) Ok I admit I was wrong all these years. While one could easily list a handful of sopranos with voices more beautful than Callas´, one has to admit that her interpretation added something very very very special, to about everything she touched. Ordered ! If I am luck enough, I´ll receive the box-set before Christmas 2021 P.S. It is a pitty no money left to buy also her "live" set. P.S.2: Thank you "Michael H" !!!! regards, DB
Have you (or anyone here) bought music from Target before, if so how is their packing? I think I will make an order there as well as my wife has the Red card. Edit: apparently Paul Badura-Skoda's Astree cycle of Beethoven Piano Sonatas on period instruments is coming back in print. I might have to hear more of the late sonatas to determine if I want to buy this, I am leaning towards yes to have at least one complete set on period instruments.
Yes, it's a strange situation. Perhaps some North America-only copyright issues? Just guessing, of course. Checked several EU sites earlier today and the set is widely available here.
I have only ordered the NYPO 175th Anniversary box set from them in the past and the packing was fine.
I've tried ordering a couple CD boxes from Target and every time they've cancelled, saying they couldn't get it. I missed out on the first round of Szell because of that, and when it disappeared immediately I got pretty anxious. So I don't have very high hopes from them. You may be luckier.
