I know we're very much focused on physical product here, but I noticed that Presto is selling the CD-quality FLAC downloads of this Jochum box for $13 USD at the moment.

I'm a definite "Yes" on the "Masters of the German Baroque" set mentioned by others above...

The only information that I could find was the back of the box which lists "Works By, Soloists, and Ensembles" -

which can be found here -

Master of the German Baroque / Andrea Buccarella, Brice Sailly, Yoanna Moulin, Capella Sancti Michaelis, Ex Tempore, Musica Aurea, et al. [31 CDs] - Ricercar - RCR 110 - 5400439001107

The "Ricercar" label is one that I'm not familiar with but their catalog is really quite impressive - and one that is definitely worth checking out for those with an interest in ancient/baroque music -

This 8 CD set will be released on August 14th but you can listen to this label-authorized link for each of the 181 selections included within the set -

Suzanne Danco: The Decca Recitals - YouTube

This is a link to the composers and compositions page at Presto -

Suzanne Danco - the Decca Recitals

She has a lovely crystal-clear soprano voice - superb enunciation with an excellent ear for accents considering she's Belgian...

This photograph brings back wonderful childhood memories... Suzanne Danco looks exactly like Mrs. Humphrey-Davies, my Grade Seven teacher, who wrote so many disciplinary letters that I needed to take home to my parents in regards to my classroom behaviour that she later needed several carpal tunnel surgeries.... none of which worked... all of which were immensely painful... serves her right... I wasn't a "bad lad"... just kind of high-spirited... and talkative... with a non-existent attention span for anything which didn't actually interest me which was just about everything... and had far too over-active an imagination... and an eye for the gals... especially Ms. Paulette Stanton of Cape Breton - 3rd best looking girl at Halifax Grammar School - 8th overall in Nova Scotia... who sat two rows left and three seats up... and who broke my hear when she ended our relationship after finding out that I was simultaneously dating Ms. Colleen McCreedy of Dartmouth - 2nd best looking girl at Halifax Grammar School - 5th overall in Nova Scotia... who went on to break my heart when she ended our relationship after... well... you can just guess the rest...

I hadn’t heard of this label before. But the releases that I saw on YouTube look fascinating. And I ordered the Andor Foldes from ImportCDs for $56.

This is the exact reason why I dropped off this platform for a couple years. I am weak and I cannot help it.

As far as I know Eloquence is part of the Australian branch of Decca, and therefore base their output primarily on classic Decca and Philips recording.

It seems that all the Universal labels, when dealing with 78 rpm sources, were in the habit of using whatever old tape transfers might be on their shelves. Lately, Eloquence has been hiring Mark Obert-Thorn for their 78s work, a much better policy. His work on the recent Munch set is outstanding.

I got the new Academy Of St. Martin in the Fields 60th Anniversary box and so far it's a really nice set. Nicely compact. There are a few discs overlapping the Argo box from a few years back, but it's not all that much. Still, I wish they had chosen other recordings since there appear to be so many to choose from.

And I think I might give it a go if I like the Foldes set.

“Music is a moral law. It gives a soul to the Universe, wings to the mind, flight to the imagination, a charm to sadness, gaiety and life to everything. It is the essence of order, and leads to all that is good and just and beautiful.”

    ― Plato

And so the well-considered purchase of music can be thought of as something of a virtue... oft-times an exorbitantly expensive virtue... but a virtue nonetheless... However, the corollary is also true that if purchased in haste without due reflection music can be more akin to a vice than a virtue when one buys that which is neither wanted nor needed...

Especially if you're spending money that you don't actually have...

Or going into debt on a charge card with a 35% APR...

Or worse - going into debt on several charge cards with a 35% APR...

Or... even worse than that... if you're holding up liquor stores and knocking off gas stations to make some quick and easy cash to buy yet another "Complete Recordings on Deutsche Gramophone/Complete RCA and Columbia Album" set especially when you haven't even taken the shrink-wrap off of the dozen or so sets you already have...

Only buy what you will actually listen to... and actually listen to what you've bought...

Every purchase should satisfy the following criteria - that it will add something of significance - something unique - something of substance to your collection - trying to listen to "more of the same" quickly becomes tedious and tiresome...

Aim for "breadth" before "depth" - and then explore that which truly interests you... At some point give some thought to revisiting that which didn't really interest you all that much the first time - sometimes it takes a second listen - sometimes you have to go "there" before you can get "here" - sometimes you have to move on and not look back...

Develop a listening project with alternating selections - genre/composer/performer - and work methodically through your playlist - it requires dedication and discipline - at times it will seem more like "homework" than you would like it to but "homework" is actually a good thing - without it we would have all been illiterates...

Buy without remorse and listen with enthusiasm... and when music leads you to become "all that is good and just and beautiful" don't let it go to your head, eh?

"Posts like these" is either really flattering or really insulting but you asked and so I'll answer...

I graduated from both McGill University Faculty of Law and the University of Chicago Law School...

I really wanted to be a landscape painter... I thought that I would be the next "Tom Thomson"... except better looking...

I applied to art school... and was turned down... I was told - "You're talented... but the best that you can ever hope for is to be a really first-rate forger..."... Forgers, while well-paid, eventually wind up doing hard time in the penitentiary... I would not thrive doing hard time in a penitentiary... way too good-looking...

I had two choices after being denied entry to art school... become embittered and invade Poland.. or go to law school instead...

Becoming embittered and invading Poland didn't really work out all that well for the last person who wasn't accepted into art school... so law school it was...

And so I'm a litigator... unless you either ask me for free legal advice or attempt to argue law with me even though you yourself didn't actually attend law school in which case I'm a landscape painter... although a somewhat embittered landscape painter...

Seriously . . . not an embittered lawyer? Chicago at least was a first rate law school (likely when you went there), though I’m not sure if there are any at all these days. I managed to get a recommendation from an alumnus who went there. It ultimately did not help. But I did well enough to obtain a federal judicial clerkship. The law seemed to mean something. Go figure. Straight downhill in a handcart from there.

So as not to digress too much, I primarily listened to Mozart in law school, and his piano concertos especially remind me of that time. I could have used a box set of them, but I had to settle for collecting them one cassette at a time, trying to avoid any overlap.

    Thank you.

Very well articulated expression of some internal dialogue all collectors of recorded music should reflect on, especially we who buy Mega volumes of music and often have to ponder whether another box is worth buying or not. These are not rules by any mean, just thought provoking ideas to help us manage our ways regarding recorded music purchases.
