Scribendum is an interesting label, specializing in decently-priced collections of hard-to-find recordings. Their box sets tend to be of outstanding Russian performers not well known in the west, or older/obscure recordings by well-known western performers. Packaging is bare-bones (no booklets, basic track/timing/performers/recording date and location on the sleeve) and the art direction tends towards the... odd. Sound quality is usually as good as can be found anywhere for a given recording. The text on a paper insert in their boxes provides an accurate description of their work: "Our primary aim is to provide the classical music lover wth fine and intense recordings of masterpiece interpretations and a listening experience which is at least as good as the recordings when last issued, or better if possible."

I have their Maria Yudina and Tatiana Nikolayeva boxes, and am very happy with them. Scribendum seems to be something of a one-person operation; I emailed them a question about shipping and the owner replied telling me he had packed the box himself! It arrived safely, idiosyncratically but effectively packaged. If you are interested in the contents of any of their boxes, I wouldn't hesitate.

I had the Furtwangler Membran box, it was the worst sounding classical box I've ever heard. The orchestra sounds like it was playing under water, for the same dates very poor compared to the good sounding Tahra, Furtwangler Society and most recently the Berliner Philharmoniker SACD box.

The worst sounding Membran/Documents sets I've heard (that I can remember, haven't heard any recently) are their Duke Ellington and Furtwängler. Horrible. That said, I'm not going to comment on the M/D labels anymore, as there are quite a few people here who love their releases.

Happy to read your comments - given their source material it looks like their releases have variable quality - so it's useful to know which sound good and which sound not so good.

As enticing as it would be to own more Karl Richter (I have 49 CDs) when he strayed from JSB, I understand the results were less well-received.

Exactly, with Membran/Documents you have to listen to some samples first to get an idea.

Don't forget Moviemars - cheaper than both, no tax, no shipping: 77.01 dollars. Ten left, so don't wait too long. Remember Brook's law. And thanks, @bruckner13 - Moviemars had the Perlman box for 57.62 buckaroos. :)

Again, clip of the day: "I never saw Reiner live as I myself was also much too young to have had the opportunity to do so and once he died in 1963 his conducting appearances afterwards became somewhat sporadic to put it mildly".

I just listened to Bronfman's recording of Pictures at an Exhibition - he seems too young to have gotten the box set treatment just yet. But what a recording! And you'll love Philip Roth's description of the man:

“Then Bronfman appears. Bronfman the brontosaur! Mr. Fortissimo! Enter Bronfman to play at such a pace and with such bravado as to knock my morbidity clear out of the ring. He is conspicuously massive through the upper torso . . . somebody who has strolled into the music shed out of a circus where he is the strongman and who takes on the piano as a ridiculous challenge to the gargantuan strength he revels in. Yefim Bronfman looks less like the person who is going to play the piano than like the guy who should be moving it. I had never before seen anybody go at a piano like this sturdy little barrel of an unshaven Russian Jew.”

36.09 dollars at Moviemars, no shipping, no taxes. And the same photo session, apparently.

Just bought both sets in one fell swoop.

Daedalus I haven't heard it all.....

I have “The Art of Rosa Tamarkina”. It is a wonderful collection of beautifully played music by a very obscure Soviet era Russian pianist who unfortunately died very young. She was also briefly married to Emil Gilels. I would buy from the label again.

ImportCDs, selling via eBay as “get_importcds”, is running a sale of sorts - buy two get 10% off. I browsed the eligible items, and the prices seemed pretty good even before the 10% discount. Shipping is free.

I bought used the Philips decca recordings vol 2 a few days ago for 30 euro (6 cd).
I enjoyed listening some samples very much.
Maybe I could pass and wait for this. Scribendum makes always good boxes.
I have lot of them! You can buy the art of konwitschny (22 CD) for 26 euros on Amazon.de.

Lucky indeed, you and @Torran! Congratulations!

I ordered it this year from Amazon.uk/Zoverstocks, it never arrived, had a long back and forth before they reimbursed me.

Eventually I found it on Amazon.jp for $100 including shipping, so I bit. Quick delivery and pristine condition, as usual.

Tempting, yet 20 Euros shipping to the US. The bigger question: do I need another Ring after Solti, Karajan, Barenboim and Levine, though?

This was the first Ring I bought almost 25 years ago. So it set the standard for how I listen to all others. To me it is in the top 3 cycles I have. At that price I think it’s worth it.
