I have never experienced such hassle when the order came from Presto Classical at the UK but so far two for two for package that originated from Germany. Why the extra scrutiny at the customs?
That is actually minor. My worst experience was I think with the Monteux RCA collection (it could have been the Sony Boukez box though, I don't quite remember which one it was). It arrived on my doorstep literally smashed to pieces. Even many CDs were crushed. I sent a picture to JPC and had a replacement within a week.
Oh yeah, last summer, scroll back a few dozen pages. No worries though, JPC was ace about it, they sent me a replacement right away. USPS was a different beast, the simple act of getting a printed/filled out proof of this destruction took several trips to the post office. LOL, minor? I beg to differ, the whole set was waterlogged and unusable. Not minor in my eyes.
And not loaded with the usual suspects. Could be interesting. But the age of the recordings concerns me a bit.
That price is ridiculous. Amazon is listing it right now at $295. I expect it to drop to $250, maybe lower -- we'll see.
It didn't end up in the Bowie box that was supposed to cover all of his work for that period (A New Career in a New Town, 1977-82), so it will be interesting to see if it's included in an Ormandy box instead.
I cannot fathom in not being in the expected Columbia Stereo recordings. They included material like this in the Classic André Previn box.
It is still only $208 at ImportCDs.com And it is In Stock BEETHOVEN / ORMANDY / PHILADELPHIA ORCHESTRA Columbia Legacy on ImportCDs
... from a previous cd of the Davies and Waart recordings (cd 45 of the new box), the timings were listed on the rear sleeve as: 23.55/8.56/8.58 for the VC with Davies. 6.50/8.04 for the Romances with Waart. EDIT: Final verdict: I managed to locate my japanese Grumiaux/Galliera/Haitink CD UCCD-9816 (2012). The timings of this cd as shown on my player are: 24.09/9.01/9.06/6.57/7.51. Exactly the same as the ones you mentioned in your post as being the timings of CD44 and 45. So, CD44/45=CD44=Galliera/Haitink.
Keep in mind, though, that I didn't receive an answer to my email, as they simply told me to send my address and they would reply as soon as possible. So you could not receive an answer soon, but your mileage may vary.
The Bowie disk would be part of a potential RCA set. I'm hoping that we will get a second Columbia box and a RCA box that will cover the pre- and post-Columbia RCA stuff, but I wouldn't bet on it.
This is good info for me as it confirms that they used the Japanese versions. Were they remastered for that particular edition, or are they the same as the 1999 Japanese box set?
Indeed. I will compare as soon a I get my box on Monday. However, the timings printed on my japanese cd are exactly the same as the ones printed on the int'l cd (Philips Concert Classics), and different from the timings shown on the player.
My Ormandy set arrived yesterday. Excellent packaging - securely inside the box from Sony, then inside the usual Amazon box. I thought you might be interested in the technical info about the contents and the remastering. I will try and listen to a disc or two today.
