Found another Living Stereo I haven't played yet...Stokowski

Played first the Scriabin / Tchaikowski piano concerto (superb), thena very early Anne-Sophie Mutter / HvK & VPO - Die 4 Jahreszeiten and finally Grieg Sokolov's Preludes Op. 28 earlier tonight.
    VERY beautiful music most definitely...:righton::D:wave::love::goodie::cheers:

That one is a must have. Make sure to play it on an SACD player with surround if possible. If not, it's still good.:righton:

One of my favorite recordings of all time. Mmmm.

  17. William Steinberg - Boston Symphony Orchestra - Holst: The Planets DG LP

Good to know. If you can believe this, I picked up that VG++ LP a few years ago at an annual garage/yard sale in Calgary. I paid 10¢ an LP for that and several other DG titles.

I might also look at getting the CD as well. I'd like to hear the Strauss material.

  18. Anne-Sophie Mutter - BBC Symphony Orchestra - Witold Lutosławski - DG CD

I purchased the CD back in the day. I think I read an exceptional review or something. I was also dabbling in a bit of 20th Century composers. Mutter's performance is very good.

The CD btw is out of print, but it you can still find copies for a low price thru amaozn sellers and such.

  19. Now playing...

Remembered yesterday evening that I had a couple/3 Living Stereo SACDs. They were a great price. Got the following new, a few years ago when a&b sound was still open. $9.99. :righton:

Fritz Reiner: Chicago Symphony Orchestra - Bartók: Concerto for Orchestra; Music for Strings, Percussion and Celesta; Hungarian Sketches - SACD hybrid
    RCA - BMG - 1955 and 1958
    SACD issue in 2004

    Amazon.com review

Since its release on LP in the mid-1950s, Fritz Reiner's rendition of the Concerto for Orchestra has stood as the standard against which all other recordings of the work are measured. Even after all these years, the recording remains just as convincing and authoritative. Reiner's superb control of his orchestra and of Bartók's rhythms and textures is still unsurpassed, even by dozens of subsequent conductors in the digital age. Likewise, the Music for Strings, Percussion, and Celesta shows just what an incredible ensemble the Chicago Symphony was under Reiner's direction.

A very nice follow up to the above Schubert. Like a top-notch Pinot with a Ruth's Chris steak.

    More Debussy - La Mer

Another recording with great sound is the 1987 digital Decca of the Cleveland Orchestra, Vladimir Ashkenazy, conductor. I have the 2001 remaster. The bass sound is spectacular in the third sketch: Dialogue du vent et de la mer.
