Looks like I am about at least a year too late for Academy Records. Are there any other such stores in Manhattan? PRE is just too far for me ...

Good, you won't be buying any of my future purchases. :D

Hmm. In Manhattan, no real good or even decent classical shops.

I've caught several used stores 'checking' the Amazon marketplace (with full dealer code scanning) before pricing. It means they'll be stuck with some stuff, but it sort of levels the playing field a bit.

Fortunately it doesn't really affect the stuff I buy. Amazon marketplace is often the best for both buying and selling, but the classifieds here and eBay have their places too.

Yeah, me too. Luckily they aren't that greedy everywhere.

I only buy new CD's via the internet. The lion share of my CD purchases are now made with either MDT or Presto Classical. I rarely buy from Amazon itself since its prices generally stink anyway. A place like Academy is only good for some OOP and used CD's as far as I am concerned ...

Reminds me how as a child I came into my mother's room who was listening to Shostakovich's Leningrad Symphony (No. 7) at full blast. She felt that given the topic of this piece (war) it had to be loud. I was pretty disturbed cause I never heard her listening to music so loud.

So I feel with your children. :D

They should regard it like coin and stamp dealers do the major catalog sellers of yore. "Sure you can get that stamp from Stanley Gibbons but we only charge 1/10 catalog for the same item."

Amazon marketplace is getting a little clogged up with over optimistic prices for some items. It's funny to see the 'going price' see-saw as new sellers try their luck and older, wiser ones play the reduce-it-till-it-goes game. Yet many really nice disks remain under $2, a reasonable $5 inc postage. That's a good price vs. the stores round here.

Buy low, where you can find it, I say.

Anyway, back to some music. Heard a nice version of the 'Il Signor Bruschino' overture, with the silly tapping (string player's bows?) on the radio this morning. Any recommendations for a recording?

The most disturbing about it is, that Bach's Toccata & Fugue in D Minor will always remind me of Rollerball from 1975.

Together with Clockwork Orange (hence my avatar) a major influence on my twisted teenage mind to discover classical music. Took me decades to overcame all those violent images while listening to this beautiful music.

    Really horrorshow. :yikes:

After discussing it with Stuart the other day, I'm listening to Herreweghe's first St. Matthew Passion today, one of my favorite recordings.

I was hoping to check out this set at the Academy Records in NYC at some point but George just delivered the bad news that bargains are hard to come by at Academy lately ... :realmad:

If you were to ask me thirty years ago what I thought of Harnoncourt's Bruckner I'd be laughing, thinking you were cracking a joke.

Of course, thirty years ago Harnoncourt was an early musique specialist.

Really awesome Bruckner, like Furtwängler in Hi-Def.

IMO, Harnoncourt has really become the most versatile conductor over the past few decades. I have this SACD and really enjoyed it ...

Nun komm der Heiden Heiland, BWV 659 from CD10 of the Walcha's stereo set was terrific. One of the best performances I have ever heard on CD.

i was in Berkeley with my wife in '97 & we visited Amoeba & Rasputin's.
while she was attending a conference in SF i had to take BART back to spend
a few hours in those stores by myself-flew home with a carry-on full of cds.
