It's got a scary bad edit in the first—Mars—movement. My favorite is still:

The SQ is great, the point-making is subtler than any other version, Boult's rendition of Mars suggests a war machine in the process of breaking down.

Yes, I had it. Traded it in. Just too many other great versions. No action in his version.

The Boult is a classic and a must have.

    Not my fave Enigma though.

Great disc. Boult's "Planets" and "Enigma" are great. But I found the Planets to be a little noisy and compressed iirc.

My favourite version of "Enigma" is actually Pierre Monteux's which happens to appear on the other CD with Karajan's 1961 recording of "Planets". I know everyone raves about the Boult and it seems "wrong" to a lot of people to have a non-English conductor. It's a bit noisy, the strings are barely audible at the beginning of "Nimrod"!

 I have this. I found it so satisfying that I never felt the need to get another version.

I have quite a few favorites of the Enigma Variations-Zinman, Jarvi and Gardiner.

I thought I read a few months ago that Pluto was no longer one of the planets. My oldest doxie was also named after this "former" planet.

Poor Pluto. It will always be a planet in our minds if we listen to Holst.

I am surprised, as I did not think Kirsten Flagstad made any recordings during the stereo age ...

    Those who know, know

I don't think so—Holst only got as far as Neptune. I know that some would-be master cooked up a Pluto movement but as we all now know, Holst was right all along.

Now you have me thinking. Unfortunately I don't have the recording with me here in NY. I went by memory. Her parts may be in mono. I will have to check when I get back home in the next few weeks.
