Unless I missed it, I could not find such info on Amazon for this set.

Collecting classical music is tough on the wallet. You always are on the lookout for that ultimate .....whatever. Too many great conductors and versions out there to choose from.

Flagstad made several stereo recordings in her final years, including stereo versions of the Wesendonck Lieder and some Mahler songs.

It seems improbable that her parts are in stereo. Her career was pretty much over in the early fifties.

That is why I have 25 Beethoven Symphonies cycles, some 30 versions of the Brandenburg Concertos and a good number of versions of St Matthew Passion and Messiah as well ... :righton:

Wow. 25 Beethoven Sym cycles. If I held a water pistol to your head and said "pick one or get wet" which would it be?

Another great soprano of that era, Elisabeth Schwarzkopf, did not make many stereo recordings either IIRC. Schwarzkopf also was born later, but probably not by much.

You didn't ask me, but if you had, I'd have said Wand.

The Karajan 63 cycle, the SACD version, is probably my personal favorite. Surprisingly, Gunter Wand's cycle is excellent, which was recommended to me by George.

I would have to go with Klemperer.

There are also some superb technicians, who may not be interested in classical music, but are always willing to help when one gets stuck in some technical problems such as computer or your audio systems.

    We don't make a lot of $$$ so I'm a thrifty buyer.
Buying used gives me 2 like new Cd's to every bran new Cd in most cases.
Depending on my finances I'll buy 4-5 Cd's a month.
This month and next month are tough so I dunno if I'll get many this Summer.
Hafta see if things go better than they have for past week or two. :(

Since I retired I have cooled it on spending. Plus at some point you have to get realistic with buying. The usage of space alone starts to get crazy.

Schwarzkopf was born in 1913, so was pretty much a generation younger than KF. And her stereo recording portfolio is actually quite extensive - from the Karajan Falstaff in 1956 to the Mahler Wang Of Youth she recorded with Fischer-Dieskau and Szell in 1968.

Not to mention the early, experimental stereo of her Marschallin for HVK's first recording of Der Rosenkavalier.

He did a number of different recordings, correct? Some mono, some stereo, IIRC. Which one do you prefer?

  23. Rose River Bear

    Rose River Bear Senior Member

I generally prefer his stereo recordings but there are some of the mono recordings which are his best.

You are much closer to Syracuse than you are to NYC. I am under 50 miles from NYC and work in NYC. I also live in the most expensive county in CT. It is all relative ...
