Just walked out of my local Borders store 2 hours ago with the following CD's for $2.06, after a 40% discount on the SACD of John Sheppard's Media vita and 3 other CD's and blew away 2 gift cards from past Christmas. There is just one small section left at the store for classical music - what a pathetic sight ... :(

The LP of this Adrian Boult recording was the first Handel Messiah I bought close to 30 years ago.

JORGE BOLET - The Romantic Virtuouso

This 4-CD set combines the romantic spirit and dignified musicality of Cuban-born pianist Jorge Bolet, who made many celebrated recordings as a Decca artist. Never heard much of Bolet.
But at about $25 new off Amazon it should be a nice addition to your already vast Piano Music Collection! :righton:

The samples didn't entice me, though. I have heard that he's better live.

Universal Classics is just another label under UniversalMusic, which owns DG, London/Decca and Philips (until last year). Recordings under Universal Classics are just repackaged music from DG and London/Decca. It is just like GMC trucks from GM, which also owns Chevy, Buick and Cadillac ...

While Philippe Entremont is not a pianist in the same league as Sviatoslav Richter, Claudio Arrau, Emil Gilels, Artur Rubenstein and Vladimir Horowitz, as a poor graduate student many years ago, I bought my first piano recording by him at $1.99 on Vox. This is nostalgia ...

I hear that's true of many Musicians.
If it doesn't entice George then George probably wouldn't be happy with the purchase.

Just my observation of the Piano Man over the time I have been here.

    G'day,

I've got this set and love it ... paid more than 9 euros for it though! But worth every dollar IMHO ... it's too bad Gilels didn't record all 32 sonatas, however.

Yup. That's why I love samples. People knock them, but often I hear enough to sway me in one direction of the other. Otherwise, the fancy cover and cheap price has me buying stuff that will just collect dust.

You ain't kiddin' :shake: You just know his Op.111 would be incredible.

Have you heard his early Beethoven sonata recordings in the green Brilliant Box? They are electrifying, especially the Appassionata.

    Yup I fully agree!
    Amazon samples are quite handy!
You know other places for samples?
Sometimes Amazon won't have samples for some CD's...esp the rarer ones.
Yeah I'm guilty of having a dust collector or three...that's gonna happen now and then.
One mans dust collector is another mans treasure.
I have been known to trade now and then.

Off the top of my head, the Brahms Handel vars. is the only one of these I recall having, and I have *that* only because the other side of the LP has Reger's Telemann vars., which when I bought the record was unavailable otherwise. The Brahms must not have made much of an impression on me, as I remember nothing about it. My recollection is that the Reger is a good enough account, but it was quickly supplanted in my affections when I bought one by a young Italian pianist named Maurizio Zanini--evidently something of a one trick pony, as I've seen only one other recording by him, a couple of Schubert stas. that failed to dislodge my preferences for other performers. His (i.e. Zanini's) Reger, on the other hand, I found wonderful, and far preferable to Bolet's, in part because Zanini took all the repeats, which Bolet cut to fit the work on one side of an LP, but even more because Zanini simply made a more compelling presentation of the music, finding structural niceties that were completely lacking in the older recording.

I've heard little of Manze, but what I *have* heard is impressive. That said, why this need constantly to dump on Fischer and particularly Hahn? Granted we've been treated to a seemingly endless parade of photogenic young female violinists in recent years, these two young ladies are artists of present accomplishment and future promise, each with her own distinct personality, and I don't see why enjoying their performances detracts in any way from the enjoyment to be had from listening to their older counterparts--and, trust me, my regular listening goes all the way back to Albert Spalding, Maude Powell, Efrem Zimbalist, Carl Flesch, and the like.

Not if you copy your recordings to a server, in which case you can break up those artificial couplings the record companies concoct to fill CD space and file like with like. As an added benefit, doing so discourages playing broad swaths of related, or unrelated, literature at a sitting because it's joined at the hip on a single CD. You can always set up playlists for concert recordings and the like.
