You’re correct. It is Haitink leading the Vienna Phil. and the 2nd PC is the better of the 2 performances.

My condolence to you and your family. I know exactly how you feel as my father passed away two weeks ago and I just attended the funeral and memorial service in NYC a week ago ... :sigh:

The last few weeks have been terrible. I have found Brahms' Requiem very comforting (even for a Protestant) and I am now playing it for another listen ...

It is interesting how each of us deal with loss. I personally could not listen to any classical music after my Mom passed. It took months to be able to listen to it again.

It's a neat recording. The program notes opine that the Rossini falls short of standards Toscanini set earlier in his career, but I found it enjoyable nonetheless. The Tchaikowsky has one character flaw of which you should be aware: somewhere along the line, somebody at RCA clipped a 4-minute segment from the tape to include in demonstration reel for some suits--and then lost the reel. Therefore, that passage is spliced in from a mono aircheck, reprocessed for simulated stereo, if memory serves. The remastering folks did the best they could, but the effect is still rather jarring. Still, I'd say the disc is worth owning and can give considerble pleasure.

    My condolences to you both.

Yes - Opus 8. Despite the early opus number, it's a mature work. He did substantial revisions to it later in life.
