Here is the first baroque recording on LP I bought almost 30years ago. That was how I started in classical music and it was a Nikolaus Harnoncourt recording.

Bill, here is a picture of the Berlin Philharmoniker found in the booklet that came with the HvK 1977 Beethoven Symphonies set.

I think the EMI German pressing was the best of the EMI lot. I don't think I ever bought any French EMI records.

I think the HvK's Beethoven cycle with the Philharmonia Orchestra recently re-released on EMI is quite good.

This is the cd version I have as well. (Less than) nothing special IMO.

That looks impressive. Checked out the other store here and they did not have it. Back to online. Thanks!

While this is not B-C, it has excellent sound quality as well.

Period instrument performance IMO has been over-hyped. I happen not to believe classical music of all periods sound good on period instruments.

I will always treasure the 1977 HvK's Beethoven cycle LP-set. There are lots of photographs in that booklet.

Giulini was a very stylish conductor. But I don't think he ever recorded a full Beethoven cycle.

Here are a few of my first classical albums. The Schubert Trio #2 is on Barry Lyndon, as well as the theme music, Handel's Sarabande. I thought I was buying the theme from Kramer v. Kramer (concerto for mandolin, #425) on the Bernstein Vivaldi, but it wasn't the right record, IIRC. Eventually I bought the soundtrack. I don't remember why I bought the Brandenburgs. I must have heard them somewhere. Another early one was HVK's Pachelbel's Canon and Albinoni's Adagio.

Not entirely sure. I think Iona Brown was the conductor of the Academy of St. Martin through the late 80's. My recording is part of a 10-CD set titled The Iona Brown Collection by the German label Hanssler. The back of the CD says 1997, but the recording might have been made earlier.

I think Gustav Leonhardt was associated with the Collegium Aureum some years ago.

This is supposed to be an excellent CD, though I do not own it. I only have 2 CD sets by Otto Klemperer: Bach St Matthew Passion and Brahms German Requieum.

Absolutely, I have this first Marriner's recording of Handel Messiah on LP, open-reel and CD. The only recording I have in all these 3 formats.
