As if CDs weren't bad enough, it's frightening how much wider a world of potential expenditure opens up if you start looking at classical vinyl...:)

Did Gieseking ever record anything in stereo?

I do not own the Berio. That's my only omission.

You'd dig vinyl George, you really would. I know the type of sound you like, and that's what records have, in spades. They sound like DCC's only with gobs more information and even better bass and smoother treble.

Yeah, I know. I just don't have the room, the money or the willingness to start over with a new format.

Yeah it definitely has a higher price point for decent entry level hardware, IMO. You also need to steer clear of the $1,000 UK first press Electric Ladyland's on eBay and find cheaper alternatives. Fortunately in most cases, they do exist.

To be honest after a month of solid vinyl listening I can't go back to 80's CDs now. I'm just looking at my big collection of them as a funding source for records. It's not quite so bad with classical - I find the lack of resolution and information to be less offputting than with rock. Also you don't have that coarse, harsh treble crashing into your ears as a drummer bangs away on his metals either.

Regarding Living Stereo, can anybody tell me, weren't there a stack of recordings that never made it onto SACD release?

    Bronth,
You could be very sorry if you spend money on Schumann by Jorg Demus in my opinion.

I pulled out a Jorg Demus Schumann LP and listened all the way through. If that is an accepted way to interpret Schumann, just shoot me now. It was beyond description. This wasn't even Shinola. There were no redeeming characteristics. So to be perfectly clear, I hated it. It irritated the h_ll out of me. I am removing it from my collection. What was I thinking when I bought it? If I were to die and someone found that in my collection, I am sure I could hear the snickers beyond the grave.

And I bet the price is right, too! If you can track down the earlier set on VAI, you may wish to sample it before buying the later recordings: http://www.amazon.com/Plays-Debussy...3LL3/ref=sr_1_5?ie=UTF8&qid=1295093998&sr=8-5 I say this because I have read that early Gieseking trumps later Gieseking. I own both sets, but I have yet to compare them side by side. His name has become synonymous with the composer and he has many many fans. But as with any piano recording, I suggest sampling first and deciding which one(s) you like. Personally, I enjoy other people's Debussy more.

Arrau was a recent find and I love it! Great sound too. Here's a youtube sample of his Debussy: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LCgdc9bKzAc

and here's links to two cheap Arrau Debussy CDs:

    I'm one of them!

I think Jed Distler, reviewer for classicstoday.com, has stated he prefers the 30's Gieseking Debussy recordings to the 50's recordings, which are the ones getting reissued (and the ones in the recording whose cover you posted). Like George I haven't tried to do a side-by-side comparison myself. You can also find the 30's recording of the Preludes on "Walter Gieseking II," from the Philips Great Pianists series. 16 bucks used is definitely worth it.

 Dale, thank you, I like such strong opinions. :righton: And this set, indeed, has been drowned in controversy, to say the least.

BUT! There's not so common, but probably relevant notion that Demus' view of Schumann was so different because he was aware of its historical/aesthetical correctness. Many "big names" played Schumann like Liszt - on large modern instruments, with pedals all over the place. And Demus tried to scale things down a bit to achieve more truly schumannesque sound.

Still, I'm not sure if I need this box, although it's dirt cheap and pretty comprehensive repertoire-wise...... Some samples were enjoyable, while others left me cold. (And I'm not commenting on sound here.)

Do you know the dates of those performances? I was able to find the disc listed on Amazon, but the pictures were too small to tell. :(
