Yeah I hear ya....not a super exciting piece for me either.
That's why I still have just a filler after 10yrs....no rush.

Not a lot of Bartok has really excited me....cept that SACD is really nice!

This interesting editorial from the Music and Arts website was recently brought to my attention and I thought I would share it here:

I need to grab that one the next time I see it in the bins. I love Szell.

I have this abridged suite version of Mandarin and find it quite nice. Overall, not his best work, but makes a fitting filler for this spectacular SACD. :righton:

Being recently on a Bartok kick I got this fabulous and idiomatic (although probably not to everyone's liking vocal-wise) version of Bluebeard's Castle (it mostly finalized my basic Bartok collection, which now comprises 16 discs or so). A must have horror opera, IMO, musically pretty similar to his Concerto for Orchestra.

Long live Brilliant Classics (and their Opera Collection series)!

Yes, I saw your other thread got decapitated. So lame. I have never seen this letter to Fanfare. Good stuff. The Dante group did a lot of releases in the 90's, I wonder if everything was lifted from other releases? Good to know, thx for finding and sharing.

I must have just missed them when I got started collecting, as I don't recall seeing any of their stuff in the stores back then or since. Only in used shops.

Hello, I would like to buy this disc:

    http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/B00000411T/ref=nosim/classiccdguid-20

Asked information to a marketplace seller and was told that he has a copy released under the "Philips Virtuoso" series. I am embarrassed to say it, but did not know about its existence. How is the "Virtuoso series" soundwise? Is it a budget line comparable to DG Galleria or are these Philips "Virtuoso" discs no-noised reissues? Many thanks in advance

    It's probably a straight clone.

    Krystian Zimerman

Just saw this on the release schedule, coming next month. Zimerman's first CD since 2006's bad Brahms PC 1 with Rattle/BPO (bad compared to his first try with Bernstein). Can't wait for this one. Saw Krystian play Bacewicz's Piano Sonata No. 2 at the infamous Disney Hall recital in April 2009. After finishing, he informed the audience it would be his last concert in America -- after exhorting US gov't to 'keep your hands off my country!', ostensibly referring to since-scrapped plans for US long-range missile defense system in Poland, even though he has lived in Switzerland for 25 years. Then, he tore into a blistering version of Szymanowski's Variations on a Polish Folk Theme, Op. 10. The best recital I ever heard, and from eighth row center, no less. First half was Bach and Beethoven, but the all-Polish second half stole the show.

That looks interesting, Eddie, especially considering I have nothing by that composer.

    Now playing:

:righton: CD2 is a magical disc for me.

IMHO, this cycle is the most honest out of all the period box sets on Beethoven.

Did you mean Haydn Symphonies? Schubert only composed 9 Symphonies.

This is an alternate universe where Schubert lived to be 87.
