Yeah, I have delayed even getting the Casals/Serkin set (or really any set of the LvB cello sonatas), as I am so happy with the Rostro/Richter one.

One of the great Sevenths, and indeed made for a great climax of the film. Credits did not list performers/recording, only composer/work, so I wondered who it was (fitting that Music Supervisor picked a British conductor & ensemble!). And I believe it is currently OOP, last reissued on a 'Double Forte' EMI two-fer in mid-90's.

Yeah - but, although I have 4 cycles on CD (one of which is SACD) none of them is Rosty/Richter. :hide:

    THANX George! :righton:
I nabbed a $6.02 Used Like New off amazon for $8.94 shipped!
Should be a nice addition to my collection.....look like it's no longer on the normal market new.
The other "new" listings for it on Amazon are costly I see!!

I had it on vinyl. As I recall it was a three-disc set.

I was an early convert to CDs. By the time Rosty/Richter was available in that format, I owned two versions (Ma/Ax and Du Pre/Barenboim), both of which I liked. Since then I have added Wispelwey/Lazic on SACD and Perenyi/Schiff (who I saw in concert - and who autographed my copy). Four sets seems like enough.

I am a big fan of Wispelwey's Bach, but haven't heard his Beethoven. How is it? Is the pianist playing a modern piano?

I meant the 7th was on the film, not specifically the Colin Davis version.

Amazon has the soundtrack and they credit it to Terry Davies, who I have to admit I don't know, but a quick google reveal he does a lot of film work.

The Colin Davis version is excellent though, can't believe it's OOP.

Been listening since I was 10 years old. Serious collecting...for around 30 years. I would not want to think about what I sold and traded. Just sold my house in NJ and am moving to a smaller house in NY. The big problem is trying to find room for all of them! My wife has talked me into selling many of them here on the forum so I will keep you guys posted when I put them up for sale.

I double George's suggestion, just grab this set, get some good wine and enjoy a very consistent romantic evening. No girls needed. :shh:

There are probably many folk here that beat my collection. Total CDs including box sets is probably around 4,000.

PS- The CD I bought from you makes around only 10 for the past year. Up to two years ago I was a buying demon.

Yeah, I have slowed a lot myself. Trying to listen more these days and enjoy what I got.

As you go through them, if you have any question about whether to sell one or not, don't do it. At least not until put it on your computer. I culled my very large collection twice, and while I don't regret getting rid of 75% of what I got rid of, there were discs I ended up re-buying.

Good advice. I will have to make up my mind and stick with the decision because I will not be able to buy them back later. I promised my wife that I would slow down the buying since retiring but brother is it tough to not give into temptation!

Personally, I have no idea how to cull, as I often change my mind about stuff and don't want to have to re-buy.

However, maybe you can work out a compromise with your wife: for every 2 (or 3, 4, 5, etc) CDs you cull, you get to buy one new one. This will help fund your new purchases, allow for you to hear new stuff and clear off 1/2 (or more) of your shelves.

You think like me...I have already told her that and she is giving in somewhat. I know of at least 200 CDs that I can live without. After that..it will be tough.

Hey everybody, head over to my poll on tenors, and cast a vote. So far there are no votes, so you can have an enormous impact. :)

Holloway's ability and technique are very impressive. I enjoyed Unam Ceylum so much I've now ordered this second disc, which has the rest of the 1681 sonatas.

getting back to listening to at least one lp a day:Beethoven 9th/Vienna Philharmonic/
Erich Kleiber, London Treasury Series R23201,1976.the record actually is a "Richmond"
purple label, made in England, the only example of this label i've seen-the other "Richmonds"
i have are very cheap-looking USA pressings that i believe sold for $1.98 back in the day.
this one is pretty noisy & the mono sound rather restricted.i'm now listening to the same
recording from the 6-cd Decca Original Masters box-sound is still not great, but my ears
    are adjusting & i like the performance.recorded 6/1/52.

I have two LP's of mono E. Kleiber Beethoven on early 70's Decca Eclipse, which I guess was the British equivalent of London Treasury Series. Sounds good, but yes a bit restricted soundstage.

Steinway D. It's a Channel Classics recording, so the sound is of course quite nice. The performance is dramatic - lot's of dynamic shifts, each phrase defined. But at the expense of warmth.

The Ma/Ax was my first digital recording, and probably the one I still listen to most. The Perenyi/Schiff is also nice.
