I'd go with Bernstein's Sony set. Very affordable and Lenny was a great Mahlerian.

Awesome - thanks for the Mahler info/recommends! :)

I almost pulled the trigger today on the DG Kubelik / Bayerischer Rundfunk 10-CD set, so I'm glad I waited.

Would it be worth going after this box set if one already owns the 60 CD set of all of Berstein's symphonies? The DSD set goes for 180 at my local record store. Simply an obscene price. I paid $90 shipped to Canada for the 60CD set...

I am not sure if all of the Mahler Syms on the Symphony Edition are New York Philarmonic. My guess is they are. If so, no it is not worth buying this set for the remastering/remixing. Now if you are rabid about the Mahler symphonies like I am, yes it is worth it for the better sound.

If the Kubelik is reasonably priced, go for it. I will warn you that Mahler can be incredibly addictive. If he resonates with you, you are going to have multiple sets.

Kubelik's readings are quick, lithe, a bit less massive than someone like Tennstedt or Solti. Some of that comes from his orchestra, which was just a tad smaller than the competition. But he loved Mahler and that comes through in every bar.

Each box set contains the same recordings, all with the NYPO except the M8 which was with the LSO.

Could it be He is actually dedicating the time He'd normally be here to listening? :yikes::hide::D

I do, but nothing's as good as Lenny (except occasionally Lenny, i.e., M2 and M7 on DG). And now with the DSD sound quality...

Tennstedt's probably my second all-around favorite.

Gotta watch movies, eat cookies and occasionally work too, you know. :tsk:

    ;)

Anyway, I have very little Hamelin and even less Alkan (only the two CD set by Smith on EMI.) I should crack off the cellophane on that one soon.

No revisiting this set by Hamelin of Medtner's music:

My boss commented (passive/agressively, via email) that company policy does not allow for chatting via the internet. So I backed off, at least for now. That part was easy, as I have found it very easy to follow direction from her, not because I respect her, but because I hate when she's right and don't want to give her opportunity to point out something I am doing wrong in the future, especially when she never takes out the time to point out what I am doing right. The hard part is refraining from meeting with her to tell her how ridiculous this rule is, especially when all of my work is getting done and I could just chat over the phone (as she does) without anyone knowing it. In fact, anyone who works 9 to 5, M-F and wants to chat while at work, just PM me and we'll exchange work numbers. But I have strayed way off topic....

I will consider it, but as you know I am trying to buy less and I don't know how much I enjoy the actual music yet. I will listen to the 2CD set that I have of Alkan's work and see what I think of the music.

Picking up on the Mahler discussion-- any thoughts on the ongoing SACD cycles (Gergiev, Haitink, Zinman)? I'm trying to decide whether to pick up Zinman in Mahler 7-- a record that's gotten a very mixed reception.

I'm rather partial to the likes of Haitink (his initial RCO recording) and Inbal in 7, so I'm thinking Zinman's straightforward approach might appeal.

In general-- anyone wowed by these cycles? It's rather late in the game to make an impression in Mahler, I suppose, but I'm very curious to hear the symphonies in top-flight SACD.....

Now playing this CD, which just arrived yesterday for a first listen. The goal is to further build out my Rachmaninoff collection methodically this year since I have forgone the big box approach for Rachy ... ;D

BTW, I think George recommended this CD to me ...

I have actually been using Music in my Vocational groups to help my clients begin to identify with and name their feelings. So far, they love Mozart and Beethoven.

    The key word is trying.
