Ok, so I have this wonderful 6LP set on vinyl, German original EMI and the damn thing looks stone Mint & unplayed.

I will be diving into this Debussy Box set very soon. The material gets mentioned along with the Ravel Martinon French EMI recordings fairly often. Martinon's Ravel and Debussy Orchestral Works are sometimes considered definitive. Many LP issues, and various CD sets, and even a DVD-A (Ravel) which we were shown here a while back.

These recordings were originally conceived as Quadraphonic releases back in 1974. That is why a DVD-A disc of Ravel's Bolero was a rather good idea.

I find that not only is this Debussy box set available in complete form here (I have the Ravel complete EMI CD set already):

But, there are DTS 5.1 encoded CDs of the material. DTS CDs btw are never are wonderful as DVD-A and SACDs, but I'll take what 5.1 I can get here.

See these discs below, I gotta have them, or copies of them whatever. Note that they are listed as DVD-Audio, I believe that the format is in fact DTS Surround CD.

24/48 DVD-A, but not true hi-rez. I have it, very good idea indeed.

    Yes, lossy DTS.

As far as old-school French conductors w/ French orchestras in the music of Debussy, no question (IMHO) that the crème de la crème was Désiré-Émile Inghelbrecht and the Orchestre National de la Radiodiffusion Française (formerly ORTF, now Orchestre nationale de France) and the Orchestre du Théatre des Champs-Élysées. He knew Debussy for many years and conducted several premieres. Recordings from 40's-60's reissued on Testament. Martinon is not bad at all, but I would not say his Debussy is definitive. Maybe in quad! Paray, of course, on Mercury, too.

Their Razumovsky's are about as good as it gets. Love their version of Op.127 in Eb.

I've only sampled the vinyl thus far and I am impressed with sound quality. It just makes me want them in 5.1 surround.

    Spinning now ...

The Italianos will always be my imprint. I do enjoy an occasional alternative, such as this. In my opinion, the first "Razumovsky" is not only the best of the three, but it also can compete with the best of the late quartets Opp. 132, 130, and 131. Again imo, 59/1 can stand as an equal to Opp. 127 and 135. I think an argument can be made that the day in 1808 Op.59 was published, the Classical Period in music was over.

Yes you can still get them. SQ was not the best quad format for playback. These DTS CDs would give a sharper clearer soundstage image. However, this SQ LP set does playback in stereo very fine.

Nice one, I have that. There is a Tchaikovsky disc by him that turned my ambivalence toward the composer on its nose. Don't think he visits the States much, would be great to see him in concert.

    Now playing:
    • Couperin: Suites for Harpsichord - Christopher Rousset [Aparte 2010 2CD, distributed via Harmonia Mundi, Rousset plays an authentic 1658 Louis Denis instrument]

It was this one from 2007, found it in the dollar bin. He also recorded the last three Symphonies for EMI, recently reissued as EMI Masters.

Hi all, how is everybody doing?
I'm glad the week is over, I feel like I've been ran over by a steamroller, back and forth, every day for the past 5 days.
    Plans for this weekend: COUCH.
Won't answer the phone. Won't answer the door bell.
Pizza and couch. And pizza. And couch.
And when you've got a comfy couch and nice speakers...
    you listen to some music.
Today I've bought this three CDs for 14€ total.

They all came in the uber lame new cardboard packaging.
Whoever invented that stuff did a great disservice to humanity.

And, bought this one on Amazon.de:

    Due to arrive next week.
I already have the first volume which I love (I'm pretty sure George is to blame, once more).

Now I'm off to sleep, tomorrow I'll give these babies a spin!

    Bye!

Faure's piano music just does not click with me no matter how hard I try, but... could this be different?
I suspect it to be... how do you say that in English? ...badass.
