Had half a spin of this last night:

I can understand what you mean about the limitations of the redbook layer... sort of congested. Wonderful music though, the performance is exquisite.

This is the only hybrid SACD where the stereo layer is pretty crummy that I am aware of.

I picked this CD up for almost no money last week. I have several recordings of Winterreise, but am enjoying this one very much.

I shall probably get the redbook only version of this, which presumably sounds better, for spinning on the computer.

This is the Beethoven 9th from the Karajan 1977 cycle. I have that cycle on an DG LP set and the Karajan Symphony Edition. However, I am not sure if the single is so easily available ...

I was thinking of getting the whole set at once, which is only about $30 on Amazon Marketplace.

The local library has the 1963 cycle so I shall borrow that soon. I'm relatively new to this stuff but I got a bit hooked by Karajan after hearing his Tchaikovsky 5th, which after a slowish start made for some absolutely gripping listening.

    Jenő Jandó

This is the only Jando disc I own. Immaculate playing, sublime touch and the perfect gentle lilt for Schubert's Viennese waltzes in 3/4 time. I would call this a 'desert island disc', it's that good. Of course, it seems to be oop now. :sigh:
    • Rossini-Liszt: Soirées musicales, R. 236 + Schubert-Liszt: Soirées de Vienne Nos. 2, 7, 8 (Valses caprices d'après Franz Schubert), R. 252 - Jenő Jandó (piano) [Hungaroton 1987, orig. edition with CD manufactured by Sanyo in Japan]

Yeah, with a beer. Pizza would be edible but not the same, though - think of all the calcium you'd be missing ... :)

Now wending my way through this 10-disc set. Good performances from the mid-1970's:

    Now playing:
    • Beethoven: Symphony No. 3 in E-flat Major 'Eroica', Op. 55 - Herbert von Karajan/Prussian Staatskapelle Berlin [Koch Schwann 1995, first and only release from master tapes of this May 1944 wartime concert, tapes returned to Germany after long negotiations as a 'gift of goodwill' by Moscow Radio in 1991 -- excellent in every respect, and recorded in mono to tape by Reichs-Rundfunk-Gesellschaft (RRG) in Berlin (see studio below) -- it sounds like a mid-50's recording, not mid-40's]

    There is no such thing.

    Anyway, I'm enjoying the Bartok.
As usual, I really like folk-tune-nursery-rhyme-Bartok, but hardcore-acid-jazz-Bartok leaves me a bit puzzled, feeling like I didn't really understand 100% what I heard.
