Yes, for me, $100 later...

 

No, don't do it! The original CDs should sound fine. Heck, even my Originals masterings of (most) of that material sound fine.

 

I could never justify spending that sort of money on a single release (it would have to be something very near and dear to my heart for me to pry my wallet that far open ). It appears I can get a used one in decent shape for about NZD$30. Alternatively I can even get flac files direct from DG for about NZD$20.

I am downloading the one CD from that series that I didn't realize was even there. I had thought that they got it all onto the two Originals CDs.

 

Now (proudly) playing.

 

Yes, just researching this morning I realized that the two Originals discs were missing a number of the Webern pieces (which you have now downloaded).

 

I had it cranking yesterday. I have the old 1957 4-LP box conducted by Robert Craft on Columbia Masterworks, also some of the pieces on a old Westminster LP conducted by Pierre Boulez. The Craft LP has the Cantatas sung by a male baritone, the Boulez (the better performance) has a female soprano. I now have to check out the Van Karajan performances.

 

I have a CD of Boulez playing Webern too. I have not compared it to the HvK.

 

Onto the Sibelius from this now. Great, dramatic reading.

I liked all of her discs on Sony. I kind of lost interest after her first DG release, which was Bach.

 

Different mastering, but yes, one CD culled from that 3CD set.

No, that's just a single disc... you end up missing out on quite a bit of the Webern that HvK did if you get that one only.

Levine's conducting of the two Berg operas is among his greatest achievements.

That's one of the few that I haven't heard yet. In fact I haven't even heard of it.

 

I like it. A very go for broke sound to it. She plays the easier cadenzas though. Still excellent though.
