Three of thirteen symphonies written when he was not even 15 (an age when he wrote his first orchestral one). Unbelievable talent.

PS "jayfan" not connected with Jay F perchance?

I think I saw him on American Idol. Probably should have stuck to piano.

Sorry, no, I have never heard of him.

Who did the painting? I like it.

Who or what is "jayfan"? I've never heard of "jayfan." Seriously. I mean it.

C'mon people. I've got Schnabel, Arrau, Kempff, Brendel (two cycles), Goode, Kovacevich, Ashkenazy, Gilels, Roberts, de Groote and most of Schiff, along with some stand-alones and everytime I turn around somebody is trying to get me to buy another Beethoven cycle.

    Have some compassion. :)

Ok, I'll be kind. You don't need the Frank.

But - you do need Annie Fischer and Gulda (Amadeo/Brilliant/Decca (not the first set in mono, the reissue of the Amadeo set, coupled with the concertos.)

BTW, how do you like the Ashkenazy set? I got mine last week and haven't checked it out yet.

Thanks to everyone of you for the comforting words and condolences on the loss of my Newton. It will be quite a long time before things will ever become more normal and it will be somber music for a while for me. Just finished playing the following Anonymous 4 CD for a first listen.

and now playing CD2 from the following set for a first listen ...

The Ashkenazy is a recent acquisition, sitting blissfully unopened, along with way too much other stuff.

Fischer and Gulda are on my Amazon.com wish list. Fischer is a bit pricey and there seem to be differing opinions on which Gulda set is preferred. I also have Paul Lewis on that list and there's Nat and the mono Kempff and some people like the EMI Barenboim and Russell Sherman and I could go on and on.

And don't get me started on LVB's string quartets. I really like those. :)

Ok, we're in the same boat. (I hope it isn't sinking...) ;)

I had assumed people were in agreement about the three Gulda sets. I guess the newest one is the one some folks prefer?

Fischer is pricey indeed, but trust me, it's worth it. I bought that set back when I only had a very small monthly budget. I used something like three months of money to get it and never regretted it for a second. Robin will be along soon to sing it's praises, so I'll stop. . .

Nat is solid, but not special, IMO. The mono Kempff is, though. A sensitive, smaller-scaled, individual, classic set. Haven't heard Barenboim's EMI, but his DG set was my very first. I really should revisit it, as back then, I preferred a more straightforward approach to Beethoven. Russel Sherman is one that I have yet to even consider. I think because it never appeared in a full set, is that correct? His concertos, on the other hand, are absolutely wonderful, with great sound.

Ah, me too. The stereo Vegh and the Italiano keep me satisfied, though.

I think I like Shostakovich's quartets even more. There I like Borodin I and Borodin II. I have Danel too, but I need to hear it again. They are definitely more modern than the dark, emotional readings by Borodin.

Just placed an order with ArkivMusic on the following CD's. Browsing through the ArkivMusic website got my mind off the recent tragedy somewhat ...

Ingrid Haebler and Henryk Szeryng were the dynamic duo back in the 60's and early 70's. I have a number of their recordings on LP but they were not represented in my CD collection until I bought the following set a few months ago ...
