Haven't had much time to post recently. Now playing a composer with whom I am only now making first acquaintance, thanks to a recent find of some Melodiya/BMG titles from the 'Authorized Shchedrin' Edition of 1997:
    • Rodion Shchedrin (1932- ): Piano Works II - Rodion Shchedrin [Melodiya/BMG Classics 49127, released 1997, Recorded at the Great Hall of the Moscow Conservatory in 1964, except two pieces from Album For The Youth, recorded 1983, Recording engineers: Igor Veprintsev and Lena Buneyeva, Remastering: Digital Media Service GmbH, Michael Glaser, Restoration/Sound engineer: Eberhard Richter using 20-bit Digital Audio Processing, NoNoise Remastering, and Sonic Solutions Turbo-Bit-Mapping, Reissue concept: Niels Høirup, Liner notes by Dr. Sigrid Neef, also with a special essay by Rodion Shchedrin titled 'I Play The Piano' dated June 24, 1997 — the Album For The Youth is my favorite of these works, which are all worth hearing, btw]

      -Piano Sonata (1962)
      -In Imitation of Albeniz
      -Two Polyphonic Pieces
-Three selections from 24 Preludes and Fugues for Piano, Book I 'Sharp Keys'
-Three selections from 'The Humpbacked Horse' (1956)
      -Humoresque
      -Album For The Youth (1981)

  9. Found another historic and wonderful GEM in the thrift store today for only $1.00

    Beethoven: December 16, 1779 - March 26, 1827 (died 185 years ago this month)

Concerto No. 5 in E-Flat Major for Piano and Orchestra Op. 73 ("Emperor")

    Composed 1809, published 1811

    Recorded in Paris, France

    Philharmonic-Symphony Orchestra of New York

    Dimitri Mitrolpoulos, Conductor

    Robert Casadeus, Piano

Columbia Masterworks ML 5100 Mono Library of Congress R56

Quotes from newspaper reviews of this record printed on the record album:

"This spectacular performance, recorded not long ago in Paris, during the Philharmonic's first European tour in more than 25 years, is one of the choice releases of the season." Syracuse Post Standard.

"Casadesus brings the proper thunder to the cadenza work. Dimitri Mitropoulos gets fine response from the ensemble. Sound is impressively live." Philadelphia Daily News

"Casadesus and the orchestra combine in a stirring performance of this most military and militant of the Beethoven piano concertos." Tampa Tribune

"If you are collecting 'Emperors' (or studying the concerto} don't pass this by. The pianist imbues the solo part with a poetic quality not often heard in this percussive era." San Francisco News

"It is a wonderfully cogent and smooth traversal, of breadth and stature, marked by clarity of detail and balance of soloist and orchestra. Reproduction is splendid, too." St. Louis Globe-Democrat

"Casadesus is a great poet of the piano. An artist endowed with his insight is able to throw new light on Beethoven's well-known 'Emperor Concerto.' " Fort Wayne News Sentinel

i'm listening to the 3d movement on YouTube.really good & well recorded.wonder if Columbia sent a team over ? or maybe Philips recorded it
for them-i think there was some sort of co-operation between the two labels at the time.

  11. Professor Vanhooser, I am now listening to the Third Movement too.
I believe you are correct stating that Philips recorded the work for Columbia
in the Salle Wagram, in Paris, France. Who was first: Columbia or RCA Victor
recording in Europe? Cheers, Long Playing Fan

  12. Professor Vanhooser:

In regards to the Beethoven: 5th Piano Concerto, newspaper reviews in 1956,

Notice the term used by the "Philadelphia Daily News"

    Quote, "Sound is impressively live".

To me this could be the first use of the word "Live" as seen in future
terminology like "Living Stereo" and "Living Presence".

    Very Interesting I might say!

  13. Help!

    Can anyone read Russian?

Can someone please translate into English!

    Much Appreciated!

The music is orchestral and sounds like a tone poem.

This 10 inch LP was Recorded in the USSR.

  14. Made in the U.S.S.R.

Here is the text located on the back of the 10 inch LP.

The composition(s) sounds very "contemporary" in nature.

Looks like "Cou 58 and Cou 59" are by the same composer.

    Composer, Conductor and Orchestra ???

Notice the hand written text at the top of the album.

Could be the name of the owner of this LP

    Thanks, Long Play Fan

This recording was made during the european tour that the NYPO did under Mitropoulos that year. The concerts were so successful that US Columbia decided to record the Emperor in Paris during the tour, so as to keep the momentum alive! So where the days back then. This recording was issued by Columbia in the USA and, under license, by Philips in Europe (as were all the Columbia US releases in Europe then).

The recording was reissued on CD by Sony France in the early 2000s and gained a lot of praise (even Hurwitz gave 10 out of 10, see below link):

Recorded on March 1 & 2, 1959, September 19, 1955 and more. Recorded in Amsterdam, Theatre des Champs-Elysees, Paris, and more.

It is again reissued in Japan now in a double CD with Casadesus's recordings of Beethoven's PC 1 & 4 with the Concertgebouw and van Beinum:
