Sorry - I've just snapped them up (and in fairness it seems that guy is more after chamber rather than symphonic music). Thanks Frank!

I was mightily relieved when your PM came up assuring I was the first to respond - was afraid after seeing George and his 10.86 posts a day viewing this thread that I'd been pipped to the post yet again...:D

I'd love to see Zimerman play it, along with #2.

This is, by far, my favorite recording of those two works:

The piano in this cd sounds great and is recorded perfectly, but for me the 'ghost playing' in a way destroys any appreciation of the performance.
Interesting, nonetheless, and for only £3,89 definitely worthy of a listen

    More violin nirvana.....

Throughout his career, Menuhin recorded Beethoven's violin concerto many times, ten If I am not mistaken, collaborating with exceptional conductors such as Furtwangler (twice) and Klemperer.

The above recording comes from 1960 and the conductor this time is Constantin Silvestri together with the VPO.

This by no means represents a bad performance but, as many reviewers have pointed out, it does not stand out among the many versions of this work. The second movement, the Larghetto, especially lacks smoothness and feels anxious and forced. The finale is also rather slow but not as slow as the next recording with Klemperer in 1966.

Menuhin's playing is not without faults either as he is sometimes out of tune. The recording is in stereo and the acoustic of Vienna’s Muskvereinsaal comes out nicely.

This is the cd version of it (OOP now)

I always wondered how a pianist can play and conduct at the same time.:D

It is not that uncommon to conduct from the piano.
Actually, before the coming of the age of individual conductors in the early 19th century, to conduct and to play was the standard.

Dimitri Mitropoulos reintroduced this practice in the 20th c. when in 1930 he played the solo part of Prokofiev's Piano Concerto No. 3 and conducted the Berlin Philharmonic at the same time.

The interesting thing is that the piece he was conducting at the same time was Mahler's Third Symphony.

Here's Perahia in his prime with the impromptus, and it's a keeper. There's wonderful fluidity and touch, along with Perahia's strong left hand. Very musical to me.

Thanks to David's recent blind comparison excercise, I listened to Liszt's solo piano arrangement of Erlkönig with great interest. Due to Liszt's sensitivity and Perahia's playing, I could hear the four vocal parts in it.

Fortunately the piano part was over long before the orchestral part.
