Yeah, the Beethoven violin sonatas sounded crappy in the more recent Decca mastering (not sure if they fixed that for the box.)

It's only a good deal if you actually listen to the discs, right?

I remember a quote of Sir Adrian Boult in his 80's. where he reflected how record companies had neglected virtually using hiim for a full decade and as he put it "Now.... they want to use me!" A similar type of thing happened to Jorge Bolet. Record companies passing over artists for a while , then realizing what they had, right under their noses - the whole time.:)

Now enjoying some more Fiorentino, this time playing Chopin Nocturnes. Sadly, the CDs are long OOP and to my knowledge, haven't been reissued.

Another example: dramatic soprano Claudia Muzio made records in her young years for Edison and Pathe; at the end of her career she made a series electrically for Italian Columbia. In her peak years she made not a single recording for anyone.

Shifting gears, for those of us on the US East Coast, best wishes to all as the storm bears down. Knowing how fragile the electric grid is in my area, I'm not holding out great hopes that I'll be in power for the duration.

Thanks, best wishes to all of us.

I sure hope I have power, I have the day off of work. Just in case, I have a bunch of batteries and a portable CD player.

I'm much further inland than George so I'm hoping the storm will lose it pizzaz before it gets here. :sigh:
Calling for 2-4in of rain and 40-60mph winds....wide spread power outages.
My basement takes in water when the ground is saturated so I'm lil worried.
Feel bad for you Guys along the coast in NYC and Jersey hope you all make it thru it's gonna get rough there.
You all have my prayers. :righton:

Real hard to beat your recommendation of Moravec Nocturnes!!
Personally I haven't found anything better yet.

Now that I have heard it, the Fiorentino is poor, actually. Arrau remains my favorite for the Nocturnes.

Best wishes to all of us!
Last year we had a hurricane and a Nor'easter and we were without power for more than a week each time. It sucks.

You know, the first time I heard a gramophone playing a 78rpm record was last year at a friend's and I was shocked with how nice it sounded!

I expect to lose power for at least 24hrs.
I hope not but it's not looking good for our projected forecast.

Listening to the latest classical addition to my collection - Ciccolini's Satie (the first, almost complete, cycle from the late 60's - early 70's). Beautiful, haunting & funny stuff, albeit contrasts between pieces from the same disc may be a bit... hmm... terrorizing from a programmatic point of view (and the difference in dynamics overemphasizes this aspect).

Hello. I saw Chopin being mentioned so... What about G. Ohlsson take on Nocturnes? I like them being more from the mind than heart. And very well and tastefully recorded. Waltzes anyone?

Jackie's best Elgar? I envite more experienced listeners on this board answer that.

The Honegger I've never heard before. It's very exciting and right up my alley! Lots of brass...
