The soloists were clearly non-American, perhaps from Sweden ... :righton:

Not to worry. Every now and then, it would take Presto over a week to ship. I have been a frequent buyer with them that I know them pretty well. I have a Handel Messiah Blue-Ray DVD back order with them since before Christmas. Dave at Presto told me his UK distributors kept telling him the DVD is available to order but cannot tell him yet when they will have any more stock in. I will wait as the DVD is unavailable in the US, period. I have in the past bought CD's from across the pond that simply were not available in the US.

The following set by William Kapell will be re-released on 3/12 and available at Amazon for $37.99.

I got the following set used but in absolutely mint condition with a solid box and great liner-notes for $29 a year ago ...

I think they are the same box. Am I right, George?

The new RCA appears to have more CDs.

You are right, the vintage set has 9 CD's while this new set has 11. I doubt I will bother with the RCA box ...

The magnificent newly released complete set of Beethoven Violin sonatas with Leonidas Kavakos (playing the 1724 "Abergavenny" Stradivarius) and Enrico Pace for Decca:

I was in all their three recitals playing this cycle live in Megaron, Athens, Greece while recording it. And now the outcome. Rarely have I experienced such a listening pleasure both interpretative and audio wise. Their Kreutzer is breathtaking. What a Work!

Try it and you will not regret it. The duo presented the whole cycle last year in Salzburg, Lucerne and all musical capitals of the world. They go on this year in Holland and Germany.

    Best,

    Alex

Looks like every US-based member of CMC has skipped town due to the long weekend ...

That would be Presidents' Day, or do you call it Washington's Birthday? It's interesting how you US folks have quite a few more holidays than we do, and quite evenly spread across all four seasons, as opposed to us having Christmas, Boxing Day, New Year's Day, four holidays all bunched up in mid-spring and not another until late August (2011 was even more ridiculous thanks to the royal wedding and a late Easter with five holidays in just six weeks, not so good for those out of work or self-employed).

Are you sure the US has more holidays than the UK?

You are correct. Columbus Day and Verteran's Day are only observed by banks and perhaps only by banks in certain states. Most non-bank companies do not observe these 2 holidays. But federal employess are off on these two non-national holidays ...

Picked this up last week - a pleasure to hear Vengerov playing again.

Bach - Partita No 2 in D Minor
Beethoven - Violin Sonata in A Major 'Kreutzer'

My favourite of his is still the Tchaikovsky Violin Concerto. Best played in the car where you can ramp the volume up without anyone complaining too much.

I made the mistake of going to the UK during the spring Bank Holiday. Getting out of London was not easy. The M25 was a parking lot.

We have not had a bank holiday in some 80 years. The last one was declared by FDR. LOL. :D
